I have never been out to Crow and only once to Marina (3 years ago). What are the logistics like? Is it possible to make the round trip in a day or is a hotel/RV/camping tent/breaking into a near by house needed not to give oneself a heart attack from exhaustion?

Marina is only an 1.5 hours from San Jose. I've done that run more times than I can count.
Crows is harder as you have to either go up to 580 or down to 152 to clear the mountains

I can't speak to rallycross, but noobs are welcome at SCCA and AAX events. My advice would be to show up 1st thing in the morning - regardless of what time your run group is. Talk to people, walk the course and ask to ride along and for someone to ride with you.
In general you will find people at autocrosses are very helpful and welcoming to noobs.
Of course garbage in, garbage out. If you act like a douche, you'll be treated like one.
Your car will have to pass tech, so if you have excessive fluid leaks bad wheel-bearings, soft brakes you won't run (and should fix anyways).
Torque your lug nuts, take all of the crap out of your car that isn't hard-fastened (what can move WILL) remove the floor mat from the driver's seat. You generally want to fill your tires 5 PSI over the max rating (yes really) for the event.
Good guide here.

A few of recommendations of non-car related things to bring
No Go's at the event
Alcohol
Smoking or Vaping on the grid
Loud Music
Pets
Phones while working the course
Nitrous Oxide setups (you will be asked to remove the bottle)
Final note: You will not win your class. Autocross is hard, and it's a skill you learn over time.
Be prepared to get annihilated by an old man driving a premiered stock motored 1st Gen Miata.
For your first event, drive briskly, but don't try to rip the tires off the car.
