Either way, if I had to find a car with $4k to spend, I would look around for an '87 300ZX Turbo but probably settle on a '91+ 240SX (coupe) that I could drive till I could afford an engine for it.

Here's what I would get...
'91-'94 Nissan Sentra SE-R. They are fantastic cars (I used to own a '92) and you can find them all day for $3000 or under, giving you enough extra to get a decent set of wheels and tires or other small mods.
The SE-R is a really fun car to drive, yet is totally under the radar of most people...unlike, say, all the Civics buzzing around .
