thanks a lot! what about just adding hp or making it faster? i've put new tires on it and they fixed the strutz (i think that's something to do with suspension?)

first thing should be spending more time on this board. take it slow no need to rush into things and breaking motors and tranny's. then do the mods that impreza7 mentioned
-nice tires
-spring/shocks
-rsb
should make a world of difference. or you can just buy my car

well 95 is more like OBD 1.5 because my 95 has gutted cats with no cel but also has a the learning feature but that is if it is a 1.8 the 2.2 are OBD 2
well to keep you happy til you can spend more money i would buy a subaru 18mm rear sway bar from www.subaruparts.com and a drop in K&N filter

when my mother brings her legacy home i will check but most people here want the obd 1.5 but it is much less finicky about engine mods but i still have all the advantages of the obd 2
and is this 2.2 is it in a coup because i tried finding a impreza coup with a 2.2 and cant for 95 but they had one for 96
plus the 95 is lighter than the 98 by maybe 100 lbs

awd4ever: I don't agree with your statement, "dude, dont get a pre 96 car." Older cars are cheaper which leaves more money for upgrades. I paid $1800 for my 93 Impreza L wagon, 5spd, AWD, interior is very nice and is grey, body is in good condition, only thing was the engine had 170k miles on it. So only things done to it have been usual high mileage worn out parts on the engine, nothing big. Price was a little high for the mileage, but it was only 3 hours from me.
I figure that when I get done with suspension, brakes, exterior (Version 2 look, not painted), and engine swap installed/tuned w/ some upgrades I will have spent total cost with car included around $11k-13k for a 300whp car.
Paint will be more.
So if someone wants to buy an older Impreza because it's cheaper, do so. People say that 93-95 there are no AWD models, hmm, mine is.
Eye$ack Killah!: Read these boards so you can learn more. I was reading the Impreza boards for like a good year before I bought mine.
More or less how much money are you wanting to spend right away?

my mother is fine and will be back this weekend and im puting a cobb 19-21mm sb on so i will look to so if it is obd 1.5 or 2
anyway AWD is a option most plp didnt get because they wanted a cheap beater and my prez is a AWD 5 speed but that is hard to find and stentorian you had to drive 3 hours for a wagon
ya 1800 for the car was alittle much but not that bad look at a honda resale with the mileage on a 93 but like you said the the body and interior was good

www.howstuffworks.com would be a great site for you, it breaks down alot of car components into sections with pictures and plenty of text to learn from.

assuming you're not dreaming and in fact planing on putting that much money in your 93 car i dont think 11k will be enough.
I dont know if you want Jspec or USDM sti engine but either way you'll need OBD II harness that works with the engine of your choice. Looking around i found them to be minimum of 1000$. That's not including the ECU, any of the switches, modules, speedometer, and so on. I expect after all that you'll be at ~2500$ just for harness.
Complete USDM engine will run you what $5k+ without tranny, and you'll need front cross member, different axles, stronger tranny. + all that shipping. + fuel management...turbo, headers, up/down pipes...custom exhaust...
+ installation price. Now i belive i've read that shops charge for 15-20 hours for usdm to jdm swap. That's at average shop rate of 65$ an hour + whatever extra for the harness. This is a custom job, so expect the bill to rack up, parts not fit...
Now, lets not forget that you'll be building everything on a 93 frame, that's 10 years old. Rust, stretch damage, road vibrations, god knows what happened to it in the past.
Any way, i think you're all talk, and i am just trying to put things in perspective for you.
I've done a 93 fwd auto ->2000 awd 5 speed conversion including interior, exterior, abs...and i simply know how much unexpected **** is involved in it.

im you just wait for three or four years the price of a USDM STI drivetrain will be much much cheaper than it is now and you might not be able to be the mechical work your self but that doesnt mean other people cant and most would just pay for the wiring of the engine and trans and this is how he is geting those numbers
