Sadly, for some, yes... including me.
Learned that the hard way. But driving an AWD in rain is nice still
I downshift into 1st fine at 30MPH.

Nothing a little rev-matching or heel-toe downshifting can't do.
When my Outback ran, give it a good rev and the shifter would eventually pop into first. I've even done a reckless 35MPH downshift (borderline of the rev-limit).
Maybe it was because it was such an old tranny. 1999 model year, lots of shenanigans done on that car.
