fyi - metal shift knobs get REALLY host in the sun. of course, if you like a shift pattern burned into you palm, go for it!

consider what mmboost said tho. It is really annoying driving my car after its been sitting in the sun (I have kartboy knuckleball shift knob) and you should seriously consider this. Obviously if u almost always park in the shade its not much of an issue, but at least at my school, shades not an option, and it does get annoying.

It looks good though! And I do agree that getting the shift pattern burned into your palm would be pretty awesome :p :)

very true... i test drove a used WRX before i bought mine that had a metal shift knob. i didn't really think too much about it untill i went to shift it into first. burned my hand and ruined the whole experience.

You gotta remember that the opposite is also true. In the winter time my hand sometimes freezes to the stupid metal shift knob. Its like shifting with a chunk of ice in your hand if you don't wear gloves. And yes it sucks to touch the knob when it's been sitting in the sun all day. Now that I think about it, I wonder why I haven't bought a new shifter knob yet???

even tho my ti shift knob gets hot during the summer.. i have had the car 3 summers and have only been burnt like 2 times. I prefer the feel of an all metal knob.

For the above reasons I will only use a leather, plastic, carbon or otherwise non-metallic knob.

There was a guy in NC that was custom machining shift knobs. His design was kind of like a honey dipper, it had fins to get rid of heat in the summer. Do a search and email him, maby he will make some more. They were CNCd and very nice

I have plans for another run in early 2005. Anyone interested can stay updated through the link Peaty posted. Since I drive a Forester XT I tend to spend most of my time @ subaruforester.com and that is where I sold the majority of my first run of shift knobs. Really the only chance I get to make something for myself is when things slack off a bit at work and it hasn't slacked off since I made my first batch.
