drive very conservatively and don't boost till it runs out. and run it till the light comes on.

too late about not boosting. My mom didnt tell me what she did. so when i got the car back i just drove it like usual. Its when i went with her a few days later to get gas with her that she went to put some 87 in, while i was getting stuff out the back and i said waaaaaite. she said shes been putting it in because it was cheaaaaaper. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. one of my friends said to use injector cleaner and a boost addative. hopfully i'll be ok. laters mikal

you would need a lot of bottles of octane booster. is your car stock or modified?

Get a few gallons of race fuel, pour it in the tank, that should bring octane levels back to norm. Then if you notice any more problems in the future, take it back to the dealership and tell them it just started doing that for no reason. They'll fix it under warranty.

Drive carefully. That hesitation is knock. Get some high octane in there quick. Good luck. Oh yeah btw, tell your mom, a little more at the pump is cheaper than an engine. You should be ok though. I think in the owners manual it tells you that if you have to you can run low octane just drive conservitivly and get better gas as soon as you can

If you're stock the car will have NO PROBLEM with 87. If you're on a map tuned for 93 - well then yea, that's really bad. Stock the rex will run noticeably slower on 87 - but you won't damage the engine.

I didn't realize putting in 87 octane gas into a WRX was that bad. Good thing i've never put anything below 91 in mine.

You are mistaken. On a hot day under load, sometimes stock WRX's ping, even on 91! 87 is a big nono for any turbo'd car. And octane boosters dont do crap but foul plugs. Goto a race shop that sells 100octane fuel. Buy 5 gallons and dump that in the tank.

Thanks guys. Hopefully things will be ok. Im going to try the race fuel. The tank is almost empty now. Laters Mikal

Tell your mom the car is ruined and she should buy you an STI now.

problem solved.

Don't let mom even near the STI when you get it.

Why did you give your mother the keys anyways? I'd NEVER let my mother drive mine.

Her car was in the shop and I didnt feel like getting up at 4am to take her to work. Now I will definatley get up. I put 104 race fuel today 4 gallons and it runs great now. I hope thats over with. Thanks again. Laters Mikal

If your tank was almost empty then just refill with Premium. No need to get the race fuel. The race fuel suggestion was so that you could raise the octane of 87 that was already in the tank.

Actually that is not completely correct either. Depending on conditions, yeah, 87 octane might cause a little knock; but, it is VERY unlikely that 91 octane will cause ping. If it does the ECU will adjust and there should be absolutely no problem.

Using 87 octane should not cause permanent damage to your engine if it is stock. Here is what happens when the ECU senses that a load of Regular gas (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=4185301#post4185301) is being used. Using 87 octane is not a cheaper way to go with a WRX. When the ECU goes to the rich map, your fuel economy will be pretty bad when it tries to prevent detonation on lousy fuel.

reset the ECU + octane booster
what does reseting your ecu do?

awns729
06-05-2004, 08:22 PM
Well the 87 octane caused the ECU to pull timing (it decreased the ignition advance multiplier), which basically causes a loss of power and also prevents knock. Now. once he gets some good octane in there and drives for a while the IAM will go back up (it ranges from like -8 to 12 or something), but that will take a while. Resetting the ECU will bring it up to its default (8) quicker than just driving w/out a reset.

So..

Ignition Advance Multiplier after bad gas which caused knock = -8

After reset = 8 (default)

After good gas with no knock for a long time = 12

Now, the numbers might be slightly off but I'm sure you get the idea.

Do a search for something like "ignition advance multiplier vishnu learning trick" for more information. :)

now now there buddy.. remember not all of us are catless now.. if you have cats in place be advised....
ANYTHING OVER 100 OCTANE CAN KILL YOUR CATALAC CONVERTERS and send pieces of it through your turbo.. if you have an stock uppipe
