**** Mod, sorry but I should have posted this in Security/Stereo ****

Hi guys,

I need some help with wiring a 'security' LED though I don't have a security system.

Where would be a good place that I could find the following close together?

- Constant 12V
- Ignition 12V
- Ground

I searched the forums and came across a post for wiring aftermarket gauges and someone mentioned tapping into the clock harness? Would that work since I want the LED to blink when the key's are out of the ignition.

I guess the Ignition 12V turns to a ground when the keys are out?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Yes, the clock harness has +12 constant, switched and illumination, plus a ground. The back of your clock is labeled which pin is which.

"Ignition +12" is zero when the key is out, not ground. Big difference.

Buy a flashing LED from Radio Shack.

If you just want a flashing LED you can pick them up at places that do car stero stuff. All it is , is a LED that has a battery attached. Theres a wire that goes to the ignition that tells when you have shut off the car and then the LED flashes.

Its pretty cheap too. But why go through all the trouble with that? Why not just get a real alarm system?

I mean most of the car theives that can actualy steal the car are not that dumb. Most can identify if the car has an alarm or just a LED flashing.
Someone that is going to rip of a WRX has deffinetly been checking out the car. Mostlikley that have seen you leave the car, and they know that you did not turn on any alarm. So i would be concerned with just putting a LED. Id spend the extra $$ to get a working alarm system, or atleast wire in a manual imobilizer.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. I do intend on getting an alarm/starter in a couple of weeks but I wanted to have something that might deter a common thief in the meantime. A little deterrence is better then no deterrence at all.

I actually just tapped the wires from the radio and mounted a varad hyper LED on one of the covers for the heated seat switch.

Thanks for the help.

Flashing lights don't deter thieves.

er... I take that back: they don't deter thieves unless said flashing lights are on top of a police car :-D
