i hear from some sti owners that even out of the factory, they get chirp up through 3rd and sometimes 4th gears, and some tire spin off the line.

i myself have an 02 sdn that dynoed in at 298.8 whp @ 6,057 rpm and 285.2 lbft. @ 4321 rpm, with little to nothing done to the drivetrain. right now, i'm rolling on 17" subzeros with 225/40 hankook hrtii's (mad ghetto), and i get absolutely no tire spin at all in any gear except 1st, which i only squeeze a tiny chirp out of during launches.

as far as i know, i'm no granny shifter, and i think my clutching is about average. any ideas why i'm not chirping at all? is the 02-03 tranny just silly like that? it's not a big deal, just curious...

I don't know why you would even try. Hard launches with a stock drivetrain and that much power could spell disaster very quickly. Tread lightly...

VRWRX is right... stock drivetrains usually don't hold up that well to that much power.

IIRC the stock wrx 5sp can only hold up to ~320whp until it craps on itself.

not trying, just found it odd that that amount of power wouldn't create any spin.

I can spin all 4's at 5000 RPM's off the line all the way until I shift into 2nd, then all I get is a chirp. This is with 225/45 Michellins on 17" Enkeis. I only do it because few people see AWD vehicles lighting up the tires, and only if I am confident that I can spare that time it takes to get traction and still win. I wouldnt recommend doing it too much though. Its making my new Excedy
clutch go to crap noticably fast.

How much power you got under the hood???

That's a feat in itself...

I dont know my total WHP, although I am going to a track this summer where they are rumored to have an all-wheel dyno. Keep you posted. I found out this weekend that I am not the only one in my area who does this on launch. I ran against a Japanese guy in another WRX, and he spun half-way into second, with a chirp going into 3rd. He beat me by about 4 car lengths in a rough quarter. Most of the people that race in this area all have 180's, Silvias, FD's or Skylines. He was smoking all of them, run after run. Nice to see somebody with a AWD that can go in and kick ass all the time!

uh...yeah, anyway, i'm gathering that the clutch has a lot to do with it.

in y'all's opinion, who makes a better clutch kit for street applications, exedy or act? i think my budget in the near future would only allow for one of the two...

Considering the fact that the clutch puts all that power to the wheels to make them spin, I guess you could say it has almost everything to do with it.

Go with an Exedy. Even if your budget allowed for both clutches, you should only buy one, since your car only needs one. :D

I am sure the choice of tires plays an important part. Naturally tires with more grip slip less vs. tires with less grip. Naturally the torque has to beat the coefficient of static friction .... blah blah .... I bet I have put most of you to sleep. =)
