I'm thinking of upgrading my car, but cannot afford to blow a tranny. I'm looking at a full turbo-back, up-pipe, and an ECU. Nothing crazy, but a good chunk of power. I never drop my clutch and try to shift pretty softly most of the time. How soft are the trannies in the rexs? Am I gonna break it with this amount of power and driving reasonably?

iam running with a stage 4 now, the car as beeen to the track alot still running stock clutch and tranny, so far so good the car is already one year old with 15,000 miles on it.
I am going to upgrade the clutch and flywheel soon, if you are just going with bolts ons i think you should be ok.
oh and yes i have done some 4500rmp drop clutch runs, but learn to feather it better. the stage 2 from turbo xs was a great upgrade.

Well it goes without saying that hard launches, speed shifting and power shifting are definately something to avoid. As soon as you upgrade your clutch and pressure plate your going to be running a better chance of breaking the transmission in the car. The more power it holds and faster it holds it the more shock your putting to your gears. The weak M/T is the only reason I never bought a M/T Subaru.

what other options would be better, i was thinking of the sti tranny, but thats going to be alot of money, but i know if iam going to play iam going to pay

You might want to check into a set of the Chalak gears. I've heard decent things about them. I just haven't driven a car with them myself.

All i'm gonna say here is i have a 99 impreza with about 325 hp. My babys only got about 40,000 miles on it, but i just blew my tranny. Yup, its probably sittin on the hoist right now. I dont drive it hard, never drop, but something bad happened and ive also heard people say things about subaru's "glass" trannys. however, my case is one in thousands. i could just have bad luck, or, scooby trannys are really "glass." one thing i do know, your gonna love a bit more power. Doesn't everybody?

I wouldn't say that they are glass or the material they are made out of it crap. Its more like its a old design that has had problems for years. So I'm glad Subaru finally came up with a new design. It only took them a decade to finally admit it was a bad design and come up with a new one.

The new 6MT is a gigantic imporvement over the 5MT. It's like they took all the problems they would have corrected and imporvents they wanted to make, put em in a big pile, waited a long time, and eventually made a new tranny which is far far superior to the 5MT.

is the 6mt a direct bolt in for a 02my wrx? or do i have to change anything. ive heard a lot about 'glass' trannys in subaru's too, and i plan on making a whole lotta mods to my rex and dont want the tranny blowin out the bottom the first day i go to the track..

search and you'll find that there's more parts to be swapped...

i figured i would have to change the rear diff, cause the final drive is probably different, but other than that, anybody know what else needs to be changed?
