Palin's performance actually surprised me a lot! I thought she was gonna have another Ms. Teen South Carolina 2007-esque moment again like a few days ago. I wouldn't go so far as to say that she was so disjointed and such as (;)) with Katie Couric on purpose just so it would seem like she "shined" in tonite's debate, but it makes me wonder. :suspicious: Of course, I don't truly believe they'd manufacture something that could hurt your campaign. It's just important to recognize the context.
They both did a good job of pushing for their No. 1's w/ a bit of an edge to Palin in the cheerleader role, which, imho, is one of the goals in a VP debate.

See, I'd agree that Palin stone the show at first simply by looking way better than anybody expected her to. However, I think it was pretty obvious that she was consistently dodging questions, and Biden did a great job of pounding his points home. The economy is what is on everybody's mind, and by working hard to appeal to middle class voters I believe that he came off with the stronger message. IMHO, this was most evident in the closing remarks where Biden made a very strong stand.
And false accusations? Seriously? Palin was throwing them out there left and right. 94 times to raise taxes? Voted to cut off funding for the troops? I am not by any means saying that Biden was a saint - he also made some blatantly false accusations - but Palin made just as many.
Overall, my reportcard on how they presented themselves was:
Palin - B+ : WAY better than people expected, but still looked like she was dodging questions and I do not believe that she demonstrated a connection with the regular voter in the continental united states.
Biden - A- : He stuck to his guns, and presented a powerful message of change and middle class power. While I am not sure how I feel about this tactic from a political ideology perspective, I think that it worked well in the context of the debate and as an attempt to pull in middle class voters worried about their economic futures.

She would have done much better answering the questions instead of spouting out slogans and talking points. I think she failed to separate her administration from Bush. She did not go in depth at all regarding foreign policies or economics plans. I think she succeeded in convincing people she's not a retard a retard, way to aim high. It also didn't help that I found her accent really annoying.

A bit off-topic here, but I wanted to comment on the moderator. I was kinda disappointed that Ifill did not allow them to respond to one another's comments as much as Lehrer did w/ the No. 1's last week. But then again, Lehrer said he had many more questions for them & that it was a shame they ran outta time. Tonite's debate covered a wider range of issues (which was good), while last week's had more verbal sparring (which was good, too). Hopefully Brokaw can find a nice balance.

So, in the transcribing Palin's answers at the debate, how are they going to spell nucular? Or is it nookyooler? For somebody who insisted on changing the debate subject back to energy you would think she'd learn how to pronounce a simple word.
And if she was going to talk about Afghanistan, she should have gotten McKiernan's name right. I'm sure he would have appreciated it.
I think she drops a mean talking point, has the arrogant "aww shucks" grin down pat, but outside of that she was saying the same empty jargon they've been saying for weeks. She'd make a great right-wing pundit or GOP press secretary. I can't see her in any other role in or near the White House.
AND She questions Biden's years of experience as a bad thing. I guess she hasn't looked at her running mate lately. Ironic...

I agree that she did well. But I think if she's going to call out the Dems for sticking to "the last 8 years" agument, she should have at least gone in some depth on her campaign's plans. I have to side with Biden when he called her out for not discussing their plans for the future.
I've been listening hard for any firm answers on what their plans are for Iran, Iraq, economic crisis, etc. and I'm not hearing anything. They may or may not have great plans, but if they don't discuss them in these debates, the public will have a hard time distancing McCain/Palin from the Bush administration.

It's scares me that people are so proud that she didnt stumble and fall on her face. We are so proud that she didnt make an ass out of herself that we are calling it a win.... wow....scary. She was coached for the last few weeks and she had her 3 or 4 main discusion points that she consistently went back to. Biden on the other hand answered ANY question that thrown out at him. Now shes gonna go back in hiding and we won't hear her speak again anytime soon. I felt like it was high school debate all over again. Oh you know these four issues so stick to them... bring it back to these issues no matter what. Host - "Lets talk about climate change"... Palin - "blah blah blah" talk a little sh*t about Obama then change the discusion to how Obama is gonna raise taxes... or how John is gonna see the war through... all the while not giving any difinitive answers on how they plan on doing it. Skip around the question and talk trash about Obama was about all i heard the whole night. Biden called her out perfectly.. im hearing alot of "we are gonna change this and change that"... yet we didn't hear a single specific issue discussed on how they plan on doing it. Like i said high school or middle school... if you vote us in we will do this this and this... im not gonna tell you how we are gonna do it .. but we will! !! smile big, look cute ! ! !
Biden the entire night, cited all his facts with dates and issues and specific votes, while Palin basically made assumptions and accusations
Whats gonna happen when we send her over seas or ask her to talk with a foreign diplomat?? We are all gonna hold our breath and hope that she doesn't fall on her face or make a big blunder and start some foreign incident.

What is absolutely inexcusable is the piss poor performance of that Socialist Moderator.
All softball questions about short term problems.
How about asking real questions, such as:
"How do you propose to raise taxes?"
"Please point out the exact paragraph in the Constitution that address abortion."
What is your plan to punish those company owners, CEOs, etc, that have ****ed up our economy?"
The only question that remotely had a black or white answer was the question regarding gay marriage, and that's a non issue.
And the "Dumbest Answer of the Night" award goes to Biden for saying global warming is caused by man.

Exactly! And we're waiting for them to "be ready to take over power of their country"? We're waiting for them to say "Hey, you're doing all the work while our 'government' is making money....please stop"?
1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.
2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.
3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.” But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping” the Outer Continental Shelf.”
4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it’s passage.
5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.
6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.
7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people's health insurance coverage -- they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false
8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska -- she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it's not a windfall profits tax.
9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO's International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.
10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation -- he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.
11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.
12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.
13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn’t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.”
14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won't pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.
