I have an '02 WRX with 70K miles. The backlight to the stock stereo in my WRX went out so I can't see what disc or track I'm listening to at night. I took the head unit out of the dash and took it apart thinking it would be an easy fix but it doesn't look like it. There are 2 bulbs underneath a metal cover but it doesn't seem that the bulbs can be replaced easily. I tried twisting but they don't twist off. It's odd but both bulbs don't light up so I'm led to believe that it is something else and not the bulbs. Everything on the head unit works, it's just the LED display that doesn't light up (the display works but just no backlight). Anybody have any advice other than to get a new stereo?

 

Mine did the same thing around 60k. 02 WRX as well. I couldnt find a cheap way of fixing it so its just sitting around collecting dust and I went and found a Clarion dual DIN to replace it. Best of luck getting it fixed.

In the sound/lights (etc.) section there is a mod detailing how to change the color of the bulbs in the stereo, so I'm sure you could use that to find a replacement bulb and get it in there. The site appears to be down now, so I can't get the link, but give it a shot.

 

Thanks but looks like the backlight can't be replaced easily so I just got a new deck. Thanks for the suggestions and advice though!
