In case none of you were driving on the 405 N last night…

I was finishing dinner at my boss’ house and I decided to call it a night. I proceeded onto Jamboree from UCI area. My Jay Chou cd was on and I was feeling pretty good…so there was no need for speeding. I’m getting on the 405 when I see lights behind me. I’m thinking to myself…HA…some idiot is getting pulled over. Well, it turns out that I am the idiot. I knew I wasn’t driving like a mad woman so I was pretty calm. The police officer approaches my car and he starts asking me about my gauges then he makes comments about how much he thinks I put into my car. Then he tells me that he pulled me over because the light above my license is out. He then told me that he knows that there are parts on my car that shouldn’t be on there. I followed orders and popped my hood. The P.O proceeded to try to open my hood. He came back to my window and asked how to open it. I told him that it is like opening a stock hood on any car. After he tried a few more times I got out of the car and opened it for him. That is when he started with his comments on how much he thinks I spent on my motor (15,000-25,000.00!!!).
Police Officer: So,…How much money did you dump into this?
Niki: Ohh…hardly anything really.
PO: Yah…sure…a good 15 thou to 25 thou…and that’s how much it will be to get it back to stock again.
Niki: There is no way that this motor has that much money put into it.
PO: So…where have you been racing lately?
Niki: I don’t race, I go to work and school…ask my b/f. I have no life.
PO: Then, why invest all this money into this car, what a waste don’t you think?
Niki: Um…there really isn’t that much here.
After that little convo I went through with him what I had in my car. I spared a few details because I don’t think he understands that there is a huge difference between my “RS” and stock ones. Anyways, he had one of his partners meet us out there…soon…I would have 2 black and white cars w/ 2 police officers looking at my car. Before PO2 showed up, PO1 pulled me to the side and said, “Like I said before I know you have stuff on your car that you shouldn’t have, but because I have a soft heart for the past 15 minutes I have decided that I am going to let you go. Do understand that anyone else would write you a lot of fix-it tickets and that is something that can add up. I’m going to have my partner come take a look at your car. He specializes in monitoring street races and cars like yours. Lately we have been having the street races on the west side of Orange County. We will pull over any car that looks suspicious.
PO 2 was pretty cool. He said my car looked too heavy and nothing was gutted out so that he doesn’t think I use my wagon for racing. He said it looks like a daily driver to him…yada yada yada.
So…everyone beware when in Irvine. Apparently Irvine cops are cracking down and they will pull people over and make you lift your hood. Once again the damn street races are ruining it for all of us. Aiya.

replace Irvine with Fremont and you'll have norcal in a nutshell.

I had a 2.5RS with no mods 5 years ago and the officers ran me through this:

PO: So where did you get this car?
Me: the dealer

PO: Thats a pretty big exhaust tip there, mind telling me where you got it?
Me: the dealer and that is a stock exhaust.

PO: Mind opening the hood?
Me: Sure
PO: So whats going on with the engine
Me: it runs great.
PO: so why are there red spark plug cables?
Me: I got those from Kragen because my other cables got cut.
PO: How?
Me: Changing the spark plugs.

PO: Thats a pretty big wing back there
Me: I do have to admit that it is bigger than the average.
PO: So where did you get it?
Me: the dealer

I hated getting stopped like that, but that turned out as one of the most hillarious experiences i ever had.

Yeah. Anyways, same thing kind of happened with us with UCD PD. We were just chilling in one of the lots and cops pulled up and gave us ton of sh!t.

I have a 2.2L with intake, catback, and pulley, and the whole time, the cop accused me of street racing. I should mention that I also have a 4EAT. I'll link the story.

I've been in irvine every weekend, except summer, for the past 1.5 years and never had to deal with cops. However, they do look very bored as I always see 2-3 cop cars whenever they pull someone over. Either I've been lucky, or I'm used to the NorCal speed limits, which would be 10-15 mph slower on the same types of roads.

In norcal, i got pulled over on:

101 just north of salinas

Elcamino Real in Mountain View

Dumbarton bridge for using the divider as a lane to pass the stopped traffic for the toll booths. (only one Fastrak lane at the time)

101 N onramp from Embarcadero. (police idiot stopped me right on the merge to the entrance ramp to 101. As he pulled out, he almost got hit by a 911 turbo porsche)

When I used to drive my RS everywhere, They never gave me **** for the mods on my car. They never asked to pop my hood. I mean you can see the visual mods, the roll cage, the seats, the steering wheel, gauges integrated into my dash.

I've been pulled over for registration, speeding, stop signs, but they never busted me on my mods.

Get a supporter sticker I guess, it helps

I believe CA has a law that goes something along the lines like this:

If you are the original owner (no title change or anything), you dont need to smog your car until it changes title/ownership.

edit: nm
Title Transfer and Smog Requirements
When you sell a vehicle that is four or fewer model years old, a smog certificate will not be required in order to transfer the title. The buyer will be charged a smog transfer fee of $8. If the vehicle sold is more than four model years old, the seller must provide evidence of a current smog certification except in any of the following situations:

The vehicle transfer occurs between a spouse, sibling, child, parent, grandparent, or grandchild.
The vehicle was registered and biennial smog certification was submitted to the DMV within 90 days before the date the title transfer took place. A vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification.

"License plate light is out..." Ha! They say that every time... I hate that. Last time I told the officer I know that the light is functional and ON, and that I felt his reason was false and to let me go back there and look at it with him... He got pissed off, ordered me to stay in the vehicle, and that he wasn't going to write me a fix it ticket this time, but to have it looked at and said I was lucky he had another call and I was free to go. Granted, I was leaving a bar which is known for having many people drive drunk after being there, so he was looking for a reason just to pull anyone over. But I was not drinking, and my driving was not erratic in any way. So it pissed me off when I saw like 5 totally wasted frat guys pass us by while I was pulled over.

I'd say I've been in my vehicle, or a friends vehicle and been pulled over about 5 or 6 times, and EVERY time they say "I stopped you because your license plate light is out"...

I know a lot of cops in irvine because I work closely with them. They have been telling me stories about problems they been having with street racers. Its funny cuz they always will comment on how my car is only good for racing and if they didnt know me they would have it sent my car to the impound. its funny to hear about complaints about irvine. did you happen to get the officers name?

No I didn’t. Although, they weren’t mean with me. The first PO1 tried to play hardball, but I was honest with them. What was embarrassing about the whole situation was that I have a lot of my school stuff and clothes/shoes scattered all through out my car...so...once PO2 saw that, he made a comment that...there is no way this heavy car is used for racing...I was a little

Thats pretty funny. I have a few guys coming in tomorrow I'll ask them if they have any new stories. Usually they get a kick out of girls because they always start crying. He was trying to get something out of you thats why he made an over estimation on your motor. people normally go "no, no I didn't spend that much I just bought this and this thats all." and then they get screwed depending on the cop.

Haha...I didn’t cry...I was real relax and chill. I’m not going to lie, I was scared. The whole time I was estimating everything in my head. I knew if they wanted to be rude they could have put me in a lot of debt. PO1 said he let me go because he has a soft heart from the time he pulled me over... Geez.
I told him I didn’t invest that much...which...when I think about it...he prob estimated right, if I didn’t have friends in the industry...I would have paid out of my you know what for all the things I have.
