I was driving last night on the 1 north and had a rock hit my windshield. It made a small crack and since then it is now about 2 feet long. What is the best route for getting this fixed? Anyone know any good shops?

A rock strike won't be covered under warranty and a dealer will probably charge in the region of $800 for windshield replacement. The only time I would get a windshield at the dealer is if insurance is covering it, or if it can be demonstrated to be a warranty failure.


06WRX4ME; You can get a new windshield for anything from $150 up depending on how sophisticated the job is. Bear in mind that budget pricing may not include the windshield gasket ($75). It is recommended that this is replaced to prevent leaks, but many people don't bother and re-use the old one.

For reference, I have used Safelite Autoglass for my replacements. For the WRX, it came to $340 otd. including windshield, gasket, labour and tax.

Thats not too bad actually.

Forest there is a safelite on Abbott st. thats where I got mine done and they did a good job.

I want to mention that there are some opinions that say OEM glass is prone to chipping/cracking from rock strikes. After I sustained a non-repairable crack to my '02 windshield, I paid out of pocket for good PPG glass to the tune of $400+. I've since gotten a chip from a small rock thrown off of a car tire more than 30 yards away. So much for big name glass being more chip-resistant. :(

At least I was able to have a guy do a chip repair with epoxy - lifetime guarantee and it's been many months with no sign of the chip turning into a full-blown crack.

If you're paying out of pocket, go with a decent glass company for an affordable price. I wouldn't worry about whether the glass is better than OEM or not. Safelite is a good product.

I called my insurance company and lowered my deductible to 0 and will call them in a week to get them to cover it. I never actually made the claim so the information shouldnt be in the system. If it doesnt work, I got a quote for 310.

i dont think the glass is pron to chipping. if it get hit it gets hit. crack. changed mine. i was hit by a rock on the freeway same with my duramax.

On my WRX to date, I have had two outright cracks, one destroyed by an over-zealous snow clearing friend, and one starburst that was repairable. When this current crack completes I'll be installing windshield #4.

I think I'd be better off swapping the glass out for a metal sheet with a narrow slot cut in it - like a tank :)

350 is prob to much for a windshild if you are paying cash i think a fare price at least in FLORIDA is oround $230 with install and Molding Or you can get away with Universal Lace $10 as apposed to the aftermarket 45 dollar cheap replica but the best a Subaru looks is with the ORIGINAL MOLDING 75$ it has that Gloss Look to it any way PPG Brand and Pilkington Brand or OEM Windshields are always your best BET Safe lite Glass is not the best as far as the Quality goes it has alot of distortion problems not all but 15% About i noo I install it ahahaha lol ohh not all INSTALLERS ARE EQUAL i have 4 years EXPERIENCE and i am GOOD if i want to be or i dont have 10 windshilds to install that day!

Some installers dont like it when you look at them install the Glass but it would be a GOOD IDEA too look it over with the installer before and After the installation that way you have a clear pic of what was there and what was not what scrathes are NEW and what scratches are old look inside for a clean noo SQUEZZ out of glue buy your head liner and at the edges of glass look for DISTORTIONS AND SCHRATCHES i can spot a messy install from a mile! LOOK to see if the Cowling is siting like it was before the installer touched your car!

Some Subys have Heated or Defrost on ther Windshileds one way to tell if you have Defrost is pick up your windshild wipers and just look for orange looking lines very UNIFORM and in the Black primer Band on the bottom of the windshield!

the price will always vary cuz not all shops are fare or will over charge you soooooo CALLLL Around beleav me that can make the difference. pluss Who cant USE $100 on some other cool toy for your car!

I now have a 0 deductible so I pay for auto glass no more.
Also, the autosafe windshield is so much better than the stock one because I got nailed by a rock and it just made a little mark, but no crack and no breakage.
