View Full Version : 2006 STI damaged, never been titled, good buy?
Jakes02 09-09-2006, 11:29 PM So, here's the story. A guy hopped up on Meth. comes in to look at the '06 STI and while he was sitting in it, he decides that he's gonna take it for a joy ride, (ie; steal it). He can't figure out how to get it into reverse so he jumps the curb and after circling the Subaru lot looking for the exit he finally spots it and heads for the highway. He goes on a 250 mile trip with cops in pursuit with a few minor (I use that word lightly) collisions here and there. I saw the car at the auto body shop without ever hearing what happened, I figured someone(new owner) wrecked it and thought nothing of it until I got to talking with the sales guy at Subaru. The damage was to the drivers side, the whole drivers side. The front and rear bumper, sideskirt, both doors, 2 rims and the rear quarter panel/pillar were replaced. They are selling it as a new car but with a price tag around 21-22K. I am heavily debating whether I should trade my '02 in for this car or not. If I were to get this car I plan on keeping it long term so I'm not extremely concerned with resale. Once the car returns to the lot I will be checking it out thoroughly but I know that my decision will be based on what I see when it returns from the shop but figured you guys would have a plethora of opinions that I could keep in mind.
Subie do 09-10-2006, 12:48 AM Buy it..... and take me for a ride.

Jakes02 09-10-2006, 01:03 AM It's very temting, especially after getting the lecture on the new exhaust policy we have.
sigma pi 09-10-2006, 06:43 PM nice breakin for the motor hehe
Jakes02 09-10-2006, 07:48 PM nice breakin for the motor hehe
For sure. that is the only concern I have really. I have read numerous articles on "hard break-in's" and soft break-in's" and found that a quicker harder break-in has not necessarily caused any problems with longevity but the guy was also not attemting a hard break-in but instead a break from the cops so.... could be good or bad.
PeanutWRX 09-11-2006, 11:17 AM just get the extra warranty.......
Jakes02 09-12-2006, 03:05 AM just get the extra warranty.......
Yeah, I'm gonna see if they will give it to me for free or lower the price of the car the amount that it will cost to get.
DetailAddict 09-12-2006, 10:42 AM If break-in is not an issue with you I say you should go check out the car BEFORE they get the car back. Once they have EVERYTHING off you can get a better feel and look of it. If it's really just body panel and you don't care about the break-in. Get the extra warranty and go home happy. :)
Good luck!
I know that my decision will be based on what I see when it returns from the shop.

I saw it before they started working on it and I went to the shop the other day and they explained what was damaged/replaced so I am confident in what I would be getting. I checked the VIN on carfax and it has 0 remarks for the car.(i find this sort of strange). The shop owner verified that mothing but body damage had occured and I didn't see any damage underneath so hopefully I will have an '06 STI in the garage in about two weeks.
DetailAddict 09-14-2006, 09:37 AM I might be talking out of my ass, but it might be a good idea to drain all the fluids from tranny, diff, and engine to see if you see any 'unexpected' chunks... Good luck!

Yeah my plan was to see if they would drain all fluids(primarily tranny and diff) so I could see how it looks. I doesn't have many miles on it but I would like to see if any chips are waiting to be found. I don't know if they will do it though. If not I will take it to Jiffy lube so if they find anything then I can tell the dealership. I'd do it myself but if I found something bed they might say it's not covered because I'm not a certified mechanic or something.
DetailAddict 09-14-2006, 10:00 AM Don't go to Jiffy lube, they'll kill your car!! Just tell the dealership you'll pay for the fluid change as long as there is no unexpected chunks there. Then again, they can change it and not tell you even there are some unexpected chunks came out.

I go to Juffy Lube for my wifes car and they are very helpful. They let me go down in the pit and check the underside of the car and put my finger in the drain hole to see what is sitting at the bottom. It's not the first choice for my car but it works for hers and they aren't completely dumb, besides I'll be in the pit to see what's going on. But, yeah I could do it at home and tell them I had it done somewhere else.
hmm I don't think you should buy it.. You should tell me where its at so that I can buy it. :)

Jakes02 09-21-2006, 09:05 PM Update?
I saw it at the body shop when I drove by today. I looks like it's all together. I don't know if the interior is done but the shop manager said the end of this week when I was there last week. I should be getting a call tomorrow or the next day.
Subie do 09-22-2006, 09:23 AM Nice!
Jakes02 09-28-2006, 12:34 AM sheesh, I talked to the dealership yesterday and they said it would be there in a week.

Interesting video.
When I was talking to the owner of the body shop I made a joke with him that he should keep it for a couple weeks until I got my bonus. I plan on going to the body shop and see if they still have it or if Subaru has it and checking it out or cleaning it to put it on the lot.
VIBEELEVEN 09-29-2006, 12:20 AM I would not buy that car, nor would I advise a friend to buy it. Just my .02.
Jakes02 09-29-2006, 12:23 AM Why is that?
VIBEELEVEN 09-29-2006, 12:31 AM Baecause a crackhead reamed the **** out of a "green" motor and it was crashed repeatedly.
Jakes02 09-29-2006, 12:43 AM Very true. The biggest redeeming factor is the warranty on the car. I have looked through many opinions on proper break-ins and can find many good points of each. I read an article on hard break-ins that gives me hope in longevity of the motor. The damaged body panels were replaced rather than fixed so the car really doesn't have any damage. I saw the car prior to it having any work done and it was minor in the fact that he side swiped another car so it wasn't necessarily a hard impact. I don't know how it drives but I'll find out soon.

Have fun dealing with SOA on that when something does happen. How much will another dealer give you for a trade in? ;)
Jakes02 09-29-2006, 12:57 AM How much will another dealer give you for a trade in? ;)
Funny you should mention that. I was wondering the same thing. Since I would be getting a pretty good price on it, it may be worth buying it to flip for another STI.
STiYLIN 10-02-2006, 05:45 PM I didn't like that my car had 60 miles on it when I bought it let alone 250miles hopped up on meth running from the cops. The exterior would be the least of my worries, on the other hand a built motor is only like 3500...
Kevin M 10-04-2006, 09:18 AM Buy it. If the story of what happened is documented, they can't deny your warranty for "abuse" because hauling ass down the freeway for 250 miles doesn't qualify. Since any damage he did is supposed to be fixed, they should stand behind the car 100%. Talk to the service manager about it, see what he thinks. Ask if he would be willing to give you awritten statement that the dealer will stand behind the car 100% as long as you don't do anything later to void the warranty.
Damn, wish I had $22k laying around myself. :p

Good thinking, about getting a written statement. Still haven't got a call yet so I guess it's time to go down and see what's goin' on.
adrian 10-27-2006, 10:50 AM shoot if you dont buy it pm me with the info. id get it in a heartbeat! its a sti for 21k! id say get service maint and ex warranty for 25k OTD, and you have a deal my friend. dont worry about the accident or the guy breaking in the motor for you . just be nice to it till 1200 miles and due a oil service. most likely the damage wasnt that bad to the panels. in order to sell it as new the dealer is required to replace the parts and not "fix" them.
plus with the documentation of the previous happenings your ok . your buying a new car. with a warranty not a used car. so the dealer is going to stand behind you 100%
Jakes02 10-27-2006, 11:11 AM The dealership made the decision for me. I had went to the body shop and looked at it several times in various states of repair to see how it was looking. I went in to the dealership and the manager sat me down and we started talking numbers. The first number he threw out was $30K. lol, to make a long story short he said that he would go down to $29K so I said thanks but NO thanks for that price I would get a slighlty used one or just pay the extra money for a brand new one. It wasn't my first choice for a color so I'm really not that heart broken. I couldn't justify paying that much for a car that has already been wrecked, regardless of whether it had all the damaged parts replaced or not.

Ahahahahahaha
Did you laugh at him?

It was hard not too, but I figured maybe he'll realize that he won't get anywhere near that price and he'll call me back. I didn't want to burn any bridges. It's probably for the best considering my monthly payment and insurance would have gone up a bit. Oh well, I'll wait for the STI hatchback to come out.
06WRXTRacer 10-27-2006, 05:10 PM The same thing happened to my 06 WRX TR. i bought it at gillmans two months ago, few dudes not knowing how to drive a stick looking to boost a few WRX and STIs, one of them tried to take my car and backed it right up into an STI, the whole rear quarter panned had to be replaced along with the bumper, part of the trunk. All of the damage was fixed before i even knew the car was on the lot maybe even before i decided to go get the TR anywho. If i had not rolled over any negative equity it would have sat around like 22k with upgraded sound package, home link and auto dim mirrors and a 100k 5 year. i too intended to keep the car throughout its life of payment and i will, but if any clutch damage is caused by my driving i am sure i can simply blame it on premature damage caused by the reckless drives who stole the car off the lot ;) go for it dude, pay off your car in 4 years not 6 and your set to go pal! never even know the dif.
jivemastert 10-28-2006, 01:04 PM Haha 30k for a car that was bashed up, in a police chase, jumped over a curb, and at invoice is $32,400?? The only way they are getting 29-30k for that car is if they lie to the person who looks at it. What color was it?
newyorkreload 10-28-2006, 03:50 PM instresting situation
Jakes02 10-28-2006, 11:09 PM What color was it?
WRB. The car was finished the last time I was at the body shop and it looks good BUT.... too expensive for a wrecked car.
