Here is some additional info which might answer some of the questions anyone might have:

1. The car runs very well (i.e. the engine has no problems). However, the differential definitely needs to be repaired/replaced. Two Subaru dealership mechanics have confirmed this. I started hearing a whining/whirring noise from the center of the car which would grow louder the longer and faster I drove. It wouldn't change in pitch or volume if I changed gears or put the car in neutral (while still moving). And a while back, I started experiencing that clunking feeling when turning in a parking lot at slow speeds. Other threads on this forum and nasioc.com have described the same symptoms: need a new differential.

2. There is no leaking that I am aware of. I have not had any other problems with this car. The engine works very well (one of the mechanics who diagnosed the differential problem did a compression test on the engine - no problems were found). The car still shifts very well (i.e. no problems with the gears or clutch). Everything else, mechanically and electrically, works very well.

3. The timing belt and water pump have not been replaced. The only maintenance that has been done is basic tune-up stuff (i.e. change oil and filter every 3000-4000 miles, spark plugs, air filter).

4. The title is clean. The only accident, which occurred in July 1999, was just a minor fender bender - literally. The fender was dented and the headlamp/turn signal was broken. It was so minor that police didn't need to be called. So, no title issues there.

5. The only maintenance I have done is basic tune-up stuff: oil and filter changes, spark plugs, air filter. The timinig belt and clutch have not been replaced.

6. If you look closely at some of the pics I've posted, the rear panel gaps are slightly smaller in some areas. The car has never been rear-ended. However, the passenger side rear quarter panel was dented in the parking lot. I pulled the dent, filled it in with bondo and repainted (not the best job). There is no rust, btw. However, it seems that the panel was slightly pushed in, resulting in a narrower gap between the qtr panel and deck.

6. The differential issue is a major one. That is why I included it in bold. In a nutshell, you can think of it as the mechanical part that transfers power from the transmission to the axles & wheels (Disclaimer: I am not a mechanic or engineer. So, feel free to correct my explanation of a differential). If you or someone you know is mechanically inclined, you can find a new differential at a junkyard and do the work yourself (you can search for threads on this forum). Otherwise, a dealer/mechanic would be able to do the work. The price can range between $2k-3K if you go to a mechanic. But it definitely needs to be repaired/replaced. I've taken the car to have it diagnosed by two Subaru dealers who told me the same thing.
