View Full Version : front rotor wear
i have 18,000 miles on my wrx and the front rotors already have groves in them. has anyone else had this problem?
it just seems that its a little soon to have to turn my rotors. my pads have plenty left on them. also what would cause this pre-mature wear?
Arcanum 11-26-2002, 12:17 AM Don't know what causes it, but of the 15 or so WRXs on the lot when I bought the car, all had grooves on the rotor. This is with some of them having less then 200 miles on them.

PimpWagon 11-26-2002, 12:27 AM I had the same problem with my car. I brought my car to the dealership because I had some REALLY deep grooves in my driver's side brake rotor. They said the WRX comes with some pretty hard brake pads, and that's what causes the grooves. It's really nothing to worry about though. If you really persist, the dealership will re-surface the rotors for you. The grooves will still come back however.
ok that makes me feel a little better. if it is somewhat normal then i can live with it. thanks for the quick response
If it was really just a chemical on the pads then why doesn't the dealership just take some light sand paper to the pad the same way you do to remove high speed glazing? What am I saying we are talking about Subaru.
nqwan 11-27-2002, 02:12 PM not so sure thats true. mine still got grooves after switching brake pads.
Wouldn't cryo hardening help reduce the amount of wear and tear on the rotors? You'd think the harder the rotors the less the pads would wear on them and maybe the rotors and the pads would wear evenly then.
WRX-U 11-28-2002, 02:44 PM There are lot's of people I have heard with this pro. my brakes are suck and a friend of mine went to the dealer to try and get them warranted...the dealer tried to blame it on the 17" rims, went to a nother dealer and got the issue resolved. I have also heard people talking about them not able to get warrantied?
Not sure, personally I don't even want to deal with it and I am just going to get Stoptechs or Brembo's.

push2 11-29-2002, 06:34 PM welcome to the club... Its normal, or so they say. The reason the guy here gave me was that the brake pads needed break in time which I thought was a load of BS. The grooves are still there and I'm at 18,000. But on the other hand at least they still work. Oh well the upgrades almost here. By the way it the grooves are really bothering you just make a big stink about how hard the car pulls the the left/right when braking also let them know how unsafe the car feels. I dont think they'll put up much of a fight. my .02
7000rpm 12-18-2002, 07:59 PM I turned the rotors at about 17k, replaced pads with Hawk HPS - 4k later the grooves have NOT returned.
Not a fan of the OE Akebono pads...
subbywrx 12-18-2002, 08:42 PM The brake pads probably hang up on the harder parts of
the rotor and tear it away little by little hence the reason
for the groves. I havent checked mine yet but if it's true
with all WRXs and I have close to 30k on mine, I'm sure
I do.
(then again, I dont brake much, heh)
Greystar 08-06-2003, 11:46 AM 4500 miles on my 2002 WRX and both front Rotor's are scored badly. I don't care what Subaru claims this *is* not something that should be happening. It may be "normal", but only due to poor design or part choice. I don't drive the WRX hard, so there is no reason the rotors should be gouged like they are.
thebankman 08-12-2003, 09:39 PM The stock brakes are indeed very poor. I brought my 02 back to the dealership after the rotors were severely warped at 5000 miles. I believe they rotated the rotors of all four brakes and did so for free under warranty, as they should. Also the pads were replaced under warranty but they claimed at 9000 miles (which I'm just hitting) I'll have to get the whole brake system checked. The brakes are totally bogus and I'm disappointed in this low quality aspect of the car. As of now there are close to 10000 miles on the car and the rotors are warping and the brakes squeal when cold.
BTW I'm looking into a big brake kit to end these problems, and definitely will not take my warranty work to Ron Price Subaru as Mrs. Price never returned my call. :monkey:
adrive 08-18-2003, 08:07 AM I just had the same problems with my brakes this past weekend. After some long distance and hard driving, the brakes began to squeal like fingernails on a chalkboard. Brought to a local shop, they said that everything was still new(@8000mi); but the rotors were inferior. I'm looking into switching to the Wilwood or Prodrive
Big Brake Kit. Stoptechs are tested to be the best but BANK.
