If the frequency of the ticking sound varies with vehicle speed and doesn't matter if the car is in gear, then there's less likelihood that the problem is your transmission, but something in the drivetrain that spins in relation to the car's motion. Does the sound diminish or go away when you get back on the throttle?

Do you have any suspension drivetrain mods done to your car (anything from suspension to brakes to wheels)? Any mods done recently? Did you buy the car new?

I see that you are from the Sacramento area. It's hard to diagnose a ticking sound online but have you considered introducing yourself at the regular weekly SRIC Saturday night meet to see if other members can listen and help you figure out what the problem might be?

you could try a replace of the fluid with some "redline shockproof"

yea i'm getting the same **** pretty much...it starts to tick when i'm idle and start accelerating in 1st and reverse....the ticking sound also happens when i brake lightly too...its a MY04 WRX...got it jan of 2004...and so far got a downpipe (not coming from that) uppipe, new rotors, and pads, ACT SS clutch, the dealer said it had nothing to do with the tranny and clutch....but it still makes the dayam sound....but the car runs perfectly fine
