I need your guys' help ('98 GC on Craig's List - is this a good deal?
I need your guys' help
hey, how's it going? My name's Andrew and I've been creeping on these boards for awhile. Now I finally have the money to buy my own GC and have found one for a measly 6K. I wanted to ask though before I jump on it, if anyone knows this car and can tell me something the owner might not be as this is the cheapest I've ever seen an RS for. Also it's a 98 with 126K on it with a stuck thermostat, I know that phase 1's have an overheating issue so I was wondering if this is indicitive of anything. Also If there's anything I should know about a high mileage RS I'd be happy to hear it. Thanks and I'm really looking forward to cruising in blue

Being that the thermostat does not help at all, especially when its a Phase I. I was looking at the car as well for a few days. Even if you had to replace the heads, 6k for a clean RS is smokin. Id say grab it.

Looks like it has some body damage on the rear passenger side quarter panel around the gas door. But for 6K, it might be ok. You'd have to see it in person and check the underside to make sure it's only surface damage. Otherwise it seems like a good buy.

The VIN was not listed in the Craig's List ad. Try to determine if the car has a clean title. Let's see... the owner is moving out of the country, the owner is not currently in the U.S., the car is being sold by the owner's 'friend'. Hmm, I wonder if the owner signed the pink slip before he left the country, otherwise how the heck can you become the new owner without the paperwork?
Ad claims CAI and CD player are only mods. In the pic, a front strut tower brace is clearly visible, unless this has been removed since the pic was taken.
Don't fork over any money on this 'friend's' assurances that he is selling the RS on behalf of the owner. If you put money down as a deposit, get a receipt in writing and check this 'friend's' identification so you know who you are really dealing with.

that just looks like a small dent....nothing major.....besides, that area is not really a structural part of the car, and anything that caused serious damage would have made a much bigger dent in the side. To me, it looks like the gas pump popped out of the filler spout when it shut off, and smacked the side of the fender, or something fell up against the side of the car. No biggie. But in anycase....def. check the VIN for a clean title BEFORE buying the car, you dont want any nasty surprises.

BTW....whats up Justin....I thought you fell off the planet, how've you been?
Thanks
hey thanks for all the help. Yea the whole friend and another country thing seems pretty shady to me too but I'm gonna check it out this sunday and if all goes well I'll finally have a reason to show up at the DCMP meet next friday. Also if anyone knows how much the thermostat's gonna cost me that'd be great. I'll keep you guys updated for sure. Once again thanks a bunch, I can always count on subaru dudes to be cool not like those DSM and Rotary bastards.

sounds like a good deal actually....that motor just scares me due to the head gasket problems...but for 6k...still a good canidate for a swap
ps - the owner could be in the military and overseas, never know with today's events...i had to do this when i bought a car from my friend and the car belonged to his old roomate that moved out of state, but then again he had the pink slip pre-signed and everything

He had the car listed for sale for awhile before he left. I've been looking at the ad for awhile now on CL and RS2.5 (I think). I was thinking swap candidate...
me too
yea I saw it awhile ago too and was/am thinking the same thing, but with my broke *** eating ramen everyday it's just a dream. Just getting the car is enough for me right now but give it a year and it'll be all good.

weak sauce
yea the car was scratched to hell. (there was one that went all the way from the tail light to the door handle) And had a blown head gasket so weak sauce. If I had the cash I'd get a swap but I'm broke so no Subaru for andrew. I'm gonna have to settle for an Integra or a gts. Sigh...salty
