Greetings:

I am wondering if anyone had purchased an extended warranty for your new Subaru car, especially for Turbo ones like 2005 WRX or 2005 Legacy 2.5GT. If so, does it worth it? I had an offer of

- $500 4Y (factory 3Y/36K + 1Y xtra) 60,000 miles
- $1000 5Y (factory 3Y/36K + 2Y xtra) 70,000
- $1300 6Y (factory 3Y/36K + 3Y xtra) 80,000
- $1500 7Y (factory 3Y/36K + 4Y xtra) 100,000

for 2.5GT 5A with $100 deductible.

Personally I think this is a rip off for normal car like Camry, Accord, Altima etc.; however, I don't know if there is any difference for performance engine with Turbo. Is Turbo easily broke? Does it require special care to make it last long? What is the life time of a turbo given a mix driving city and highway?

Any additional comments and insight thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

 

I didn't purchase any extended warranty. Mainly cause I'll be voiding it soon.

 

I think most people on this board are in the same boat as nKoan, including myself. We'll be making modifications, and therefore voiding even the original factory warranty, so it's pointless to get the extended.

 

Yeah. If you're keeping it stock then maybe an extended warranty is for you but if you're modding, screw that thing.

 

You have a 60K power train warranty, that will cover most catastrophic failures. Don't bet on that happening, though. Subaru has everything to gain by producing an engine that is trouble-free for 60K. If you keep the engine stock, you are good for at least that long. On a well-maintained engine, I would be very dissappointed and surprised to see the intercooled turbo crap out before 120K miles. I had the nearly identical turbo in my 1st gen Eclipse. It lasted until the bearings gave out at 196K.

 

I did , but I'm stock and bought OEM. I read about how some go out of business without notice, so I figured I'm better off w/the subaru plan. I think its called Added Security (too cold to go out to the car and check). Bought a CPO with the same plan as my daily driver also (Baja)

 

No extended warranty here ... I waited about a year before modding my wrx mildly ... Even at a basic Stage2 set-up, this car should be just as reliable as new for a long time (I'm figuring well beyond factory warranty dates) ... It's got most of the power I'd like to have now, so the factory warranty that's still untouched should be fine ... Just no suspension/drivetrain warranty anymore ...

 

I did purchase an extended warranty. It bumped the full warranty up to 100,000 miles. I cashed that sucker in after 1 month. I lost $200 but oh well. I started reading how bad SOA could be and decided that if i have any big failures i would fix it my self. I have had 1 warranty claim with SOA. It was the rear axle seal at the diff. Other than that completely trouble free. I have 32k on it and 20 k was cobb stage2, and currently i have a tuned utec stage4+. Still running strong.
