ordered wheels..Correct offset +42??

would a +42 offset fit on my 04 wrx in a 17x7.5, 2 piece wheel such as the work mesister S2R......I just ordered them from japan and the rep and people at japan recommended the +42 offset rather than the standars +48 for a 7.5 width wheel. Maybe the fact that its a 2 piece..im not sure
i am concerned about the fitment, especially in the future when i decide to lower the car on sprngs or coilovers.....
can someone help meon this issue?

scoobyblu04 07-09-2004 10:23 AM

i already know theirs a post simliar to this...but this is for 17x7.5 and 2 piece wheel
should i not got with the +42?

scoobykid04 07-09-2004 11:07 AM

i have a 04 wrx and i have 18x7.5 rims that are a +42 offset and i ride fine so you should be good

Lavery 07-09-2004 01:02 PM

it should be fine, but 48 would be better. I don't know why they would have recommended that offset. I've had problems running +42 on my 98 rs, but with a rex you should be fine.

scoobykid...what kind of wheels are you runnin??

thanks lavery

I have a 02 WRX with 17x7.5 48mm offset rims with 225/45/17 so3s, SPT springs and my tires rub the fenders when Im pushing hard in corners so since a 42 mm offset will move the wheel even farther out I would think those will rub. Incorrect offset not only causes rubbing issues, it will also cause the wheel bearings to wear prematurely and that can cost up to $700. The correct offset for 02-03 is +48mm-52mm and Im prety sure it is the same with the 04s.

scoobyblu04 07-09-2004 07:02 PM

that seems to make sense..i agreed with you MO REX....but the people at works wheels and in japan are saying that since it is a 2 piece wheel the offset will be lower...
they say that their work emotion cr 18x7.5 +42 for wrx fit with no problem
im still confused to who is right

MO REX 07-09-2004 07:50 PM

To be quite honest, Im not sure about there being a difference in a 2 piece wheel or not but I dont see how it would make a difference since offset is the distance from the centerline of the wheels width to the mounting surface. Hopefully Luke@tirerack will chime in.

It will fit, but I dont recommend it. Go with +48 or higher.

Alot of people are saying its "ok" to get lower offset wheels, but thats because of the whole JDM "In crowd" seems to be doing the whole low offset wheel thing right now... Its just a fad IMHO, go with what was designed to work properly with the car.

thanks guys...but that what works recommends me to run and their the experts so i guess if it causes long term damage or rubs i can easily say it their fault

You can say it is their fault when you have problems because the offset is wrong but is that going to pay to correct the problem? If you want to talk to a real expert, call someone that works for Subaru and I bet they will tell you that those wheels are not the correct offset for your car. I would call them and ask if they have the wheel you want in an offset between 48-52mm. If they dont make that wheel with that offset, I would be willing to bet they are telling you to go with 42mm offset because they dont want to lose the business. Dont think that since "they are the experts" they arent willing to sell you the wrong rims just to make a buck.

Imprezer 07-11-2004 08:34 PM

They recommend it becuase they don't make +48. +42 is too agressive for a WRX. You will have rubbing issues and will not be able to run 225/45/17. I would stay away from anything lower than +45.

scoobyblu04 07-11-2004 09:45 PM

they can make custom offset up to +56....but they didnt make me feel comfortable with choosing the +48 rather than their recommended 42

This should help... http://wac.addr.com/auto/obs/wheels.html .

Since you can get that wheel in other offsets, dont go with the +42. Im not positive but I would think a +50 would be best so you can run 225's. You may want to ask around and see if anyone is running +50 with 225's to make sure they wont rub the struts.
