the 17x8's are absolutely beautiful, But Id like to have more meat than the stock 225's. I noticed when at work an E500 Benz comes with 17x8's and 245 Michelin Pilots. I think that should fit the sti with out rubbing but I don't know for sure. What is the widest tire that can be installed on a 8" rim, If I recall late model Camaro's had 265 or 275's on a 8".

Any ideas?

The max listed size you can use depends on several factors. Each brand and model tire has a different physical width for a given listed size. I've seen a stack of 205/50/16s stand taller than a stack of 235/45/17s.

Second, and more important, it depends on the offset of your wheels. With the stock wheels, I would say it is likely that you could get those 245s to fit without rubbing, but watch that you don't get too much change in wheel diameter. 245/45s would be much too tall for use (slow the car down, make your speedo off low, and certainly rub). 245/35 on the other hand would probably be great. Anyway, look at the actual width of the tire you plan to use and compare it to the actual width of the RE070s before you make the swap. there is room for some growth but not much.

Im running 245/40/17 Khumo V700s on Rotoa 17X8 with no rubbing at all. 245/40/17s are the same diameter as 225/45/17s, 25" +/- a tenth depending on whose specs your reading, so they wont raise/lower your car or throw off your speedo. Also every 245/40/17 Ive ever seen is spec'd to fit on 8" wide rims. Check tire rack, they have specs for all the tires they sell.

I love my STI, but I'm kinda 50/50 in regards to the wing. It gives the car a killer look ( don't know if it really does anything though) and it blocks my rear vision of other cars, especially on the highway.

Your car looks great!, Is that with stock suspension? or did you drop it a tad?

yeah took the wing off the first week

And those are Tein springs, I like them because they even the wheel gap, most other springs drop but still leave uneven gap.

I took the wing off today, I have to say the car looks totally different, doesn't scream " pull me over and lock me up" as much. But I have to bolt it back on not sure what is worse no visibility out the back or 17 new water drains?

How is the ride quality with the Tein springs Vs. stock STI?

Tein springs are very affordable, you can find them several places for under $150, I installed them myself on the stock STI struts which are very nice, well damped pieces that handle the new springs very well

How many miles did you get out of the oem tires? I have only 1282miles on my 05, but I drive it the way subaru intended it to be.

What I'm seriously considering are the following:
1) 245/40-17 tires, wonder if a 255 will fit in back since it has fender flares?
2) adjustable rear sway-bar and end links
3) springs
4) a good chip ( Cobb has a nice one )

but even in stock form the car is a dream to drive, but I'm not one to leave anything alone for very long.

1.I run 245/40/17s just fine on 17X8 Rota Torques, there is actually less room in the rear than in the front, dont let the flares fool you

2.rear sway bar is a dream

3. Unless you want coil-overs or adjustables, you will be hard pressed to find nicerstruts then our stock 40mm twin tube, inverted stock struts. Also they were made to work with the lower/stiffer spec C springs so they are well suited to lowering springs already.

4. a turbo-back exhaust and tuning makes a BIG difference

speaking of adding turn-in response, the fact that Subaru widened the rear 10mm(5mm each side) is a bit counter-intuitive if they wante to give it better turn-in. Im running 12mm front spacers on the fronts right now and its a completely different car, we're talking EVO crisp turn-in

I would recommend at least the H&R 5mm spacers to get them back to at least even track, something to think about
