Hawkish Democrat Calls for Iraq Pullout
WASHINGTON - One of Congress' most hawkish Democrats called Thursday for an immediate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, sparking bitter and personal salvos from both sides in a growing Capitol Hill uproar over President Bush's war policies.

"It's time to bring them home," said Rep. John Murtha (news, bio, voting record), a decorated Korean War and Vietnam combat veteran, choking back tears during remarks to reporters. "Our military has accomplished its mission and done its duty."

The comments by the Pennsylvania lawmaker, who has spent three decades in the House, hold particular weight because he is close to many military commanders and has enormous credibility with his colleagues on defense issues. He voted for the war in 2002, and remains the top Democrat on the House Appropriations defense subcommittee.
I don't know much about this guy, but I agree with this:
Our troops have become the primary target of the insurgency. They are united against U.S. forces and we have become a catalyst for violence.
I read a article in the newest Atlantic that makes me think harder about a immediate pullout. I still don't think we can as this guy says, but I think everyone should read it. I'll try and put it up for you guys to read sometime soon.

Umm,

No.

They havn't. The primary target has become anyone they can get thier hands on, namely Iraqi civilians, wich will continue to alleviate support for thier cause. ****ing preschools and weddings. But you won't hear about it.

The US pulling out of Iraq right now would be like taking a crutch from a one-legged man.

HellaDumb 11-18-2005 08:27 AM

I think all democrats should begin pulling out at once ;).

OK, if we pull out now, what becomes of Iraq?

Here's another solution:
- Escalate the war effort by taking off the kid gloves of our forces.
- "Persuade" Syria et al to stop their citizens from becoming martyrs in Iraq.
- Show Iraqis that democracy is the way to go & support them them to this end.
- Use Iraq's oil wealth to pay for their freedom/liberation.

Invade a sovereign nation and then use their natural resources to pay for our war "liberation" efforts? That is genious, Dr. Evil!!

MVWRX 11-18-2005 11:32 AM

If we pull out now, Iraq's future will be up to Iraqis. We took out their evil dictator, even though there's no proof or evidense that he was a threat to us, and now we should let them deal with the religious feud they have over there.

After the French helped us liberate ourselves from the British, they let us build our own god damned country...we should give the Iraqis the same length of rope, if they hang themselves that's too bad.

Salty and I already agreed on how to coordinate a withdrawl that doesn't make it look like we're turning tail.

Why can't anyone see that there are more choices available to creative thinkers than "cut and run" or "hold the course"?

Probably because there aren't many creative thinkers in politics or civilian military command.

Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is what I have been saying since day one of this entire debate. We have a million different options and seem to only look at the two most evident.

Anyone watch Cspan while they discussed the resolution that the Republicans put up in the last second so that the Democrats couldn't put theirs in. The Republican one was for a pull out right now. While the Democrats wanted a pull out as soon as possible. Boy did they have a fight like I have never seen. And one of the Republicans almost got linched for what she said about Rep. John Murtha, she called him a coward , boy do I see her not winning her re-bid for election.

VIBEELEVEN 11-22-2005 10:40 AM

Supposedly she was relaying a message from one of her constituates, a former marine who said "marines stay and fight the battle, cowards cut and run."

Talk about spin.

I'd agree that the whole hearing was purely political bs though.
