Smile blackberry news: RIM vs. NTP settlement [long article]

This was originally a RT thread. Rather than make a new one. I just moved it here.

And further down...

The settlement appeared to end a saga that added fuel to the contentions of some analysts that U.S. patent cases were out of control and hurting business development.
Others said the fight was emblematic of the quest by technology innovators to get recognition for their inventions in the face of incursions by big business.
The dispute had even prompted the U.S. Department of Justice to tell the court that BlackBerry services were vital to its operations.
Shares of RIM rose 19 percent to $85.20 on the Inet electronic brokerage in after-hours trading. Meanwhile, shares of Palm Inc. (PALM.O: Quote, Profile, Research), which makes the smartphone Treo 650, a competing product to the BlackBerry, fell 4 percent to $40.36. ***

Now I know that this may not be a paramount of a political issue... Makes me wonder if this NTP company was being a classic example of a patent troll, or was RIM really acting like a big corporate bully?

they are patent trolls btw.. their buisness model is to get VC from rich people, and buy up obscure patents in certain arenas and then sue companies.
