Another government program "Misled the public"

EPA = Environmental Protection Agency (ran by the white house)

http://www.commondreams.org/headlines03/0823-03.htm
New York's leaders responded with dismay.

Rep. Jerry Nadler, a Manhattan Democrat, called for a Justice Department investigation. "That the White House instructed EPA officials to downplay the health impact of the World Trade Center contaminants due to 'competing considerations' at the expense of the health and lives of New York City residents is an abomination," he said in a news release.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said in an interview it was "understandable that in the midst of a crisis the White House did not want the EPA to sound alarmist." But, he warned, "If the public loses faith that things are safe when the government says so, we'll have done more damage than a pointed statement the week after 9/11 would have."

The White House did not respond to requests for comment.
I bet those 50,000 people who were told it was safe and now suffering from lung problems are all probably wanting that good ol healthcare reform!

...

Lovely how things like this always just seem to fall in place.

Yin 08-13-2009 09:54 AM

you're pissed that the government made the EPA lie to us? surely there are more pressing issues of your life that you are much more concerned about, no?

VRT Gump 08-13-2009 10:03 AM

yin, the issue is that there was a big deal and they played it off as nothing was wrong.

ipozestu 08-13-2009 10:07 AM

They lost me on "progressive"

http://www.commondreams.org/about-us

Side note:

I thought we were all pretty much in the center in terms of political stance. I guess that's not the case. That website is garbage.

iLoqin 08-13-2009 10:55 AM

Either way, it happened. Leader of the EPA told everyone the air quality was safe. Now many people are suffering from the effects of it.

This again, Yin, shows you the power of the government. In addition, she was granted immunity after a trial in court, so NO ONE was held responsible for the words that came out of her mouth.

To me EPA is a joke, just another way to control us.

Not even New York is helping many of the volunteers who are suffering from different lung diseases because of it. They need money, they should have the greatest healthcare available. These are the officers, firefighters who are heroes and yet they do not get the proper care? They should be the 1st on the list for proper care.

Same gov't that wants socialized healthcare.
Same gov't that believes in human-caused global warming.
Same gov't that started & continues a horrible war.
Same gov't that spent my grandchildren's money today.
This is very true. Am I supposed to be insulted?
Maybe it was just a "fun fact of the day" type of statement.

ipozestu 08-13-2009 01:24 PM

Here's how I see it? Tell me how closed minded I am when I'm done.

A building that was planned in the early '60s was built. Many of the products we exclude from building projects today were used in the construction of these towers. WHy do we exclude these? They're F'n harmful!!! One day a few dudes get bored and decide to fly a perfectly good plane into a couple of perfectly good buildings. Undisturbed, these building would have stood the test of time. Stir them up a bit, different story... What they became when they were turned into a pile of rubble; who knows. What I do know is the combination of incinerated materials, carcinogens, chemicals, etc. was not, could not, nor will it ever be "safe". Common sense tells me this. No gov't organization would ever be able to convince me otherwise.
I'm not surprised the EPA misguided the sheep. I'm surprised the sheep followed the EPA. See I like to think for myself. Turning to the gov for answers, I think not.
SO I guess technically, yes, I am closed minded. I'm trying to figure out why that's a bad thing.

ipozestu 08-13-2009 01:27 PM
can we please get the thread title changed to "OMG, the Bush Administration Lied!" With as many misspellings as possible please.
Now now let's be fair. "The government lies" is much more appropriate.

iLoqin 08-13-2009 01:48 PM

Ok, so the government made the mistake of saying something wrong. Where is the compensation for all the guys who are our heroes and now suffering from all kinds of lung problems? They should be getting the correct health care either way. Even if the EPA didn't FLAT OUT LIE, these guys who were at ground zero within around the 2 weeks were risking their lives to dig out anyone else that could be alive.

Yet only a handful have gotten hooked up, and many are dying or have died or their length of their life dramatically decreased to within the next few years. Why isn't EVERYONE getting the best healthcare? Aren't we supposed to take care of our cops and firefighters? This never made any sense to me.

Screw you Christie Whitman! Make sure everyone is safe? How about the other 50,000 who have gotten sick and are dying off!

knock 08-13-2009 02:17 PM

I'm no expert, and I know that it's not a good idea to breath in demolished building dust. Any dust for that matter. This is not rocket science here

iLoqin 08-13-2009 02:26 PM

Kinda show how incompetent our white house is along with the EPA. I still don't know how they can get away with this stuff. The least they could have done was have some air tanks for people working in ground zero. You don't say to the public it's safe.

Most people we know are sheep anywho. They take governments word for it.

Actually, "Another government program misled the public" is grammatically correct. Led = past tense of lead.

Simply an observation. If you have no desire for personal growth or improvement, please continue as you always have.

ipozestu 08-14-2009 02:21 PM

Growth??? Dude I used to be a peace love dope hippy kid. Make love not war all that F'n jazz. I have grown and continue to grow.
Growth??? Dude I used to be a peace love dope hippy kid. Make love not war all that F'n jazz. I have grown and continue to grow.
I should have been more clear: switching from one extreme to the next is not the kind of growth I was referring to. As I indicated, personal improvement is an integral part of the growth process. Closing yourself off to alternate views or opinions is shutting yourself off to the possibility of personal evolution and condemning you to ignorance.
