“This is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING ’PLEASE SPEAK ENGLISH.”
PHILADELPHIA - An English-only ordering policy at one of the city’s most famous cheesesteak joints drew a warning Monday from officials who threatened to file a discrimination complaint.

The city’s Commission on Human Relations planned to argue that the policy at Geno’s Steaks discourages customers of certain backgrounds from eating there, said Rachel Lawton, acting executive director.

Geno’s owner Joseph Vento posted two small signs at his shop in south Philadelphia proclaiming: “This is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING ’PLEASE SPEAK ENGLISH.”’
WHAT? Why the hell wouldn't the owner of this establishment be able to request that his goods be ordered in a language he understands (which just happens to be the language of the land)?

Jeeze...

if its his private business, I believe he can tell them all to **** off :)

we cant make them speak english, but they can make us speak whateverthe****enese? If his ways of running his business turns away customers, isnt that his choice?

I agree, he should be able to have that sign if he wants. It's rediculous people are calling it racist; there isn't any anti-certain language. You can't order from this guy in French, German, Spanish, Chinese, etc...so what race or ethnicity is he hating on? None...

I even saw a story about this that says he doesn't turn people away if the do order in another language, he is just basically encouraging people to do so.

jdepould 06-13-2006 12:34 PM

it's not like they'd get very far trying to order in another language . . . he's just telling them ahead of time.

I wonder how many languages have the equivalent of "cheese steak" in their vocabulary anyways?

spedmunki 06-13-2006 03:34 PM

if it's a private business/property you can make up whatever rules you want: case in point, Augusta National where women are not allowed to play golf. They have pissed and moaned and launched petitions, but it all comes down to private ownership and they have lost everytime.

private ownership FTW

also, if you dont like the way someone runs their business, GO TO A DIFFERENT ****ING BUSINESS....thats what pisses me off the most, its not like theres only one place in each state that makes a cheese steak

But there is only one Geno's in Philly and once you eat one you know why it is famous.

But yeah, that wouldn't go very far in court I don't think.

If they really don't want to eat at Geno's, then they can walk less than 20 feet to eat across the street at Pat's. (But Geno's is better;))
