There is a difference between lowering and improved handling. S-Techs give you the sense that they work well because you're removing suspension travel and because they are firmer than stock, but the problem is that they lower too much and you're basically riding on your bump stops. And compared to good springs the rates on them are far from competitive. You saw a lot of '08 WRX struts dying with low mileage with stock springs on them, but the numbers greatly increased with people running aftermarket springs.
