Clunk clunk only when wet!

Hello,
I have 28k miles on my 2k3 wrx sedan, I've got tanabe gf210 springs on and stock struts, I've got a new clunking noise only when things get wet and it started in the back of the car and now moved to all four corners, I put spring silencers on but no help. I can't duplicate it either by pushing up and down on the bumper/ fenders. The struts don't feel too worn, but not sure. Looking for opinions I know on my '97 neon with lowering springs I'd get about 30k miles on a set of plain struts before they'd make funny noises/bad ride. But I could usually duplicate it on those ones.

got the same problem

Hi, got the same problem but in my case its just in the back.. any solution? brought it already to a service center and they just checked it and said that there is nothing wrong.. really surprised cuz the sounds only come when its wet or when it rains.. its a lancer 2001.. got about 22,000 km.. installed my 17in rims about 6 mos back.. my springs and struts are all stock.. help..

I'm just going to replace my stock struts at the end of the summer, they don't make the noise at all anymore since its been well above freezing even when wet. My best guess is that my stock struts just don't like lowering+cold weather+ water. I'm just going to get kyb agx's and wait for the cold weather to return to see if the struts were the problem. Sorry I can't be of anymore help than that.

are they upside down. it sounds stupid but there was a problem where there wa a part of the suspension that could be put in wrong, and there was a crunchig sound from something bmping whenit gets to close, my 2 cents.

Hey! i have the exact same problem with my 2002 rs 2.5. i had skunk 2 coilovers on it and when i went back to stock a clunking noise started coming from the right rear. i never associated the noise with rain, but i do know that it comes only under certain circumstances and i nor any service place have been able to duplicate the noise.

i took the plate off and tried tightening down the strut but the noise is back.

I have this problem but not just when its wet. I would say anything below like 20 mph I had this clunking sound in the right rear but now its at all four corners! I'm gonna check it this weekend, hopefully its fixable.

so is it completely stock? you have exhaust? i have found my hks exhaust piping whacking the sway bar or the trans bracket when i lowered my car(TIEN FLEX). if you want i can take a look at it.

No exhaust, I changed the Tanabe springs out for Tien H tech springs and kyb shocks in place of the stock ones, After talking to a Subaru mechanic who had the Tanabe springs I am pretty convinced it was the Tanabe's making the noise. He had the same problem with those springs too. I've had my current setup for about 20k miles now and haven't heard a clunk since.

No, the car is all stock except for the GF210s. I love the springs (perfect ride height, ride) but that damn rattle. Thanks for the offer EJ20 but I'm gonna look at it this weekend and if I can't fix it I'll let you know. Thanks

ya like what ryeoj2003 said i would go with with his set up. its sounds like a spring issue. well let me know man.

i have the same flipping problem. when the i drive in the morning and when i hit puddles. what about the springs make it make that noise? they have just gone bad?

ryeoj2003 05-16-2005 08:21 AM

If you have the Tanabe GF210's then yes I'd say you have the same problem, something happens when they get wet making them move around more, guess the rubber seats can't hold as well, the GF210's if you'll notice are not nice and flat on the bottom(or top I forget) like your stock springs are. This is what I think causes the noise. The Tein's I have now are flat like the stock springs and don't make any noise when wet. I don't think any damage will ever come of this and if you don't get alot of rain/slush/snow where you live you'll be ok. I liked those springs very much, I just could not deal with the clunking.
