Found a WRX Virgin, but the car's title is in question

I went to check out a 2004 Black WRX yestarday and when I drove it, it drove perfect. No issues. Car looked like it was in great condition. The car has 55,000 miles and the guy is only asking for $10,000. Sounded like a great deal, but then I called him today and he said the title was on a rebuild title and the problem was the back door or something in the rear. He also said he took it to the DMV and mechanic to make sure everything was running perfectly and he said it was checked out to be perfectly running. Should I still put up the deal?

agree
you never know what really happened with a rebuild/salvage title
it could have rolled for all you know
stay with a clear title

This is the one I am talking about. Its really hard to find a WRX in my price range with the amount of miles I want >.< This one seemed to be perfect until the guy told me it was a rebuild title. He said he was a rear door accident.

Never EVER go by what the seller is telling you. Ask for any and all reciepts, pull a car fax, and check any and all sources he can give you.

If he can't provide proof of just being a "back door" problem, don't do it.

Trust me, I learned the hard way and it cost me over 5k to fix the mistakes of the first owner.

No, walk away from this one. The only time I would consider any sort of rebuild or salvage title is when I know the person who put the car back together. Even then, I'd have to consider what type of damage the car suffered before being repaired. A collision can be cosmetically fixed but weakens the chassis. This can affect handling in emergency situations and will not provide full protection in the event of another major collision.

My area code is 34741, I'm willing to go up to $12,000 and I'd prefer 60,000 or less miles.

Lets help me find a WRX! =P

A carfax is worthless if the work was done by a shop that doesn't report all repair work. If there is a rebuilt title then there was substantial damage done to the car at one time. I had thinking like you when I bought my 04wrx 2 years ago with a rebuilt title. It could "look" and "feel" like its a great car but, after closer inspection you start to see where the body work has been done and the door gaps don't exactly line up. The suspension might also be bent up and you can't always see that with the naked eye. I ended up replacing a whole bunch of suspension stuff on my car and I am still finding little cosmetic stuff that bugs the crap out of me. Either walk away from this or take it to a reputable body shop and have someone go over the car and tell you what has been repaired. The story from the guy who sold me my car "oh it slid on the ice into a curb and bent a strut but, its all been fixed now and is perfect." In actuality the car hit a curb, went over the curb, mobbed over rocks, then back onto the street into the back of a truck. The seller is never going to tell you a horror story before you try to buy his car.

Don't do it!!! Stay away from the car and just keep looking. I looked around for my car for over 3 months. Sooner or later there will be a car that will pop up that you will absolutely drewl over... and then it might have a clean title for you too. just.02
