Engine oil consumption?

Sorry if this topic has been covered before. I tried searching but didn't yeild any results.

Is it normal to lost 1/2 - 3/4 a quart of oil per 3-4000 miles of driving? I notice that everytime i fill up about 4.5 quarts, i only drain about 4 quarts back outta the car.

Thanks.

Subaru of America says it's normal. But I'm still tripping coz I never had a car that consumes oil other than my STI!

That amount of oil loss falls within specifications but I don't like to lose that much oil in such a short amount of time.

I don't lose any measurable amount of oil between changes, which can range from 3000 miles to 5000 miles. I have used Mobil 1 5W-30 since the second oil or third oil change. I pretty much followed this break-in procedure, which does not contradict the Owner's Manual recommendation on engine break-in.

Also, the specification for a WRX is 4.8 quarts, not 4.5 or 5 quarts. Underfilling the crankcase won't contribute to using oil but if you do extended freeway driving in hot weather or up a long grade the oil temps will shoot up very quickly. Overfilling presents its own set of problems by aerating the oil and weakening the film upon which the crankshaft and connecting rods rotate (they shouldn't actually make much contact with the bearings while running).

Like the subers say above, 1 quart of oil loss between your 3-4K oil changes is not considered to be a problem. Some subies may burn a little oil. With conventional oil (and I use conventional Castrol GTX) some oil is lost to boil-off. This is different than burning oil. Conventional oil is more volatile than synthetic. So, under harder diving conditions the engine (and especially turbo bearing) heat boils off some oil. If some hard running causes not more than a quart of oil per 3-4K to boil off in this fashion, then it's not a problem. Just check your oil level between changes and top it up a little, if needed. I keep my oil level right at the top of the full zone and check it a few minutes after shutting down after a good run. Check the engine oil dipstick while the engine is still fully warmed-up.
