WRX Wagon vs. Acura RSX--can't decide
I have been mulling this over for months now and can't pull the tirgger. I have listed the pros and cons of each vehicle. Any input greatly appreciated!
Pro-Acura
1. I have had only Honda products and they never failed to take me from A to B over 1/2 million miles. I would feel like a traitor if I left them
2. Insurance--$800/yr additional premium for WRX (227hp vs 160)
3. The fact that Honda/Acura does not sell OEM turbos leads me to believe they are more costly to maintain and have less longevity. I heard a blown turbo would set me back $3G. Is this true? What would it run me for 15,000 and 30,000 mile service? Are there any large expenses down the road? Does it have a timing belt? Multi-valve high rpm on Acura has no torque but the engine is indestructable. The turbo on the WRX is made by Mitsubishi and they stink. They have never built a reliable car
4. Mechanics--in my area (Springfield, NJ) there are two excellent shops that work only on Hondas and Acuras. They used to work for dealers and opened their own shops. I don't know of any independent Subaru mechanics and the dealers charge too much--they have a higher overhead.
5. Sticker price difference of $4G
6. Re-sale value of Hondas and Acuras considerably higher, consulted all books (NADA, Edmonds, etc).
7. I have been told due to only 3000 WRX's imported per year, there are no discounts off sticker. Is this true?

OK SUBARU OWNERS, HERE IS WHY I AM CONSIDERING THE WRX
1. Tired of having to rev to 6000rpm to get some torque.
2. All wheel drive--we get snow where I live
3. acceleration/handling
4. Subarus are as reliable as Honda/Acura and Toyota/Lexus. Although re-sale value has been lower, perhaps since the WRX is a limited production car, it would command a higher re-sale or trade-in $$.
5. Cargo/loading--the wagon has less lift-over than the hatch.
6. Cabin--WRX is a true 4 passenger car, the Acura is really a 2+2--back seat for children only. More head room due to no sunroof. Easier access, higher off the ground with no penalty in handling--not bad, Subaru!!

NEUTRAL--
Appearance--Subaru gets the edge on exterior, esp. in Yellow. Is this color like impossible to get? White is nice, too. Acura gets the edge on the interior--they put a nice soft guaze-like material over the dash. The interior on the WRX is bland--hard black plastic. Acura is two-tone saddle-walnut.

Let me start by saying that they are both excellent cars. I will pitch for the WRX wagon, here's why:
1) 4 Doors, wagon utility
2) Speed, speed, speed--RSX-Type S will also not be competitive with a WRX...period
3) All wheel drive surety
4) "Who, me officer?" looks---yet you know when you see it there is something suspicious!
5) Fantastic handling- I owned a 2000 328i (sans sports pkg) before my current WRX and I think the WRX handles better!
Reliability- yes Toyota and Honda cars have superior reliability than most manufacturers...but you keep the WRX stock and it will run for 200k without any probs
--now if you raise the boost, etc without changing the internals, then yes the engine internals will suffer..but why mod the WRX?--in stock form it will take most cars--including a reasonably souped up RSX
Finally, I have 58k miles on my car and it drives just like the day I bought mine!

thank you for your prompt reply
You refer to the great handling--do you have 16" or 17" rims. Also did you opt for the sport suspension? I think it's a $1500 option
There are two 17" options on the WRX, yet they're thousands apart.....????
Thanks again

WRX doesnt have a "sport pkg" option---it comes stock full strength sport--the way i like it!
The expensive option you ead about is only a set of BBS 17" rims --they look great but are tooo expensive..if one wants bigger rims its cheaper to get it from Tirerack etc!
I have the stock 16" rims--i have found the handling quite sufficient and although tempted to upgrade to 17" for mostly cosmetics i have not done so...
by the way, i am not sure if you are willing to consider a used car but my car is for sale..priced at $16500

Alright, here's my spin on it. I own a 98 Acura Integra, which is currently turbocharged and boosting 22lbs of boost (15 around town) problem free, on stock internals. J/k, that would be suicide lol. Actually I spent alot of money resleeving the block, o-ringing, dropping in forged rods/low c/r forged pistons and making sure I had the fuel delivery to match my power output. Annnyway we also own a WRX. The WRX build quality is definetly on par with a honda, and besides the WRX 5 spd tranny (only week link, just wasnt built for a 230hp AWD car, but getting beefed up in 2004) the WRX should be just as reliable as the RSX, or RSX-S. Even if you do get the old 5spd tranny, as long as you dont drive it the same way you would a honda FWD car (IE clutch drops at 5000rpm and lots of wheelspin, just doesnt fly on a stock AWD car, except maybe the STi 6-speed) you will be fine. So far our WRX has been completely problem free, and was the reason I turbocharged my own car, as driving a good turbocharged car is so much fun. Instead of driving a good honda (a great experience in its own right), where power delivery is pretty linear, and peaks wayyy up in the rev range, the WRX is a whole different story. Unlike a honda which you have to shift like an F1 car, in the REX you can intentionly bog a gear, and just sit back and wait for 3000rpm to come up. Sure, before 3500 the WRX isnt anything special, but you'll hear 3500 coming (high pitched whistle), and around 3500 the motor starts growling, you're *** starts getting pushed down into you're seat, and you'll have all the passing power you need from then on to redline. Anyway, my integra is considerably more powerfull than the rex now (325 to the wheels at high boost), but without the whole AWD thing things get abit hairy. Let me tell you, laying down strips is fun, but theres alot to be said for sitting on a hill at a red light in pouring rain, and being able to take of quickly without the front end of the car bouncing around, the front wheels clawing the ground, and pretty much no fowards movement. Anyway, the point is the RSX Type-S is a great car if you like a pretty sporty, dry wheather, semi-lux sport coupe with compromises to fit under the Acura luxery marquee. But if you're like me and much prefer AWD, 227 HP (and ALOT more torque than a honda), better handling, 4 doors, deep bucket seats, and essentially all around a much faster car (with reliability) to match, I think the choice is clear.
Oh yeah, and you can go up skiing in a WRX, SCHWWWING!

true honda fans will never let anything get in their godly NA Vtec's way.. (no turbo. superchargers.)
on cornering NA still holds its groud..
WRX is not limited .. come on!! they sold a crap load of them.
my future sub dealer alone would prolly sell more than 3000..
WRX is way more fun..
throw yourself sideways is much more enjoyable.
get STi suspension and go for aftermarket wheels.. dealer making a grip of cash on the wheels.
my .02$

I would go with a WRX wagon, just because it has more space, I also like the ability to easily add a bike rack or two up there.
But i would rather get an RSX over a WRX sedan. Only reason is because i like how hondas drive around town. WRX has a heavy clutch and the car just feels heavy at low speeds.
Also RSX would be faster at freeway speeds due to its drive train.
I own a wrx sedan
I love it, but its not working for my lifestyle, I like outdoor activities (wagon would help here) and i also do a ton of commuting (freeway speed of 2wd).
