would you consider a rear window wiper a SAFETY item?

japanese models have the 2011 STI with rear wipers.

hatchbacks have them.

but never the sedans for the US models...

so would you consider it a safety item? a mandatory safety item? ugly???

Kind of an odd item and it rarely comes into play but it is definitely a good thing to have. It is odd that generally hatchbacks (across all manufacturers) have a rear wiper and sedans/coupes don't even though the rear windows on both body styles still get just as obstructed by dirt and water. It also is extremely handy when you have to look out the back while parking and such when it is raining/snowing or if the window is just plain dirty.

Not a safety item, more of a "handy to have" item like cruise control.
