Towing a boat with a '97 Impreza wagon
I am considering buying a boat, oddly enough as a money making idea, long story. I have a '97 Impreza wagon with the EJ22 (I think that's the engine) and need to know if I can pull a boat with it. The boat with motor, trailer and other stuff should come in right at the 1,500 lb max towing capacity stated in the owner's manual, this scares me a bit. What can I do to boost towing performance...tranny cooler? Is there suspension modifications I can do for towing?
You would want a trans cooler. Exhaust, intake, etc. You want the vehicle to make more power so that it dosnt stress the powerplant while towing. Also, try to invest in lightweight parts so that the motor dosnt have to lug around the un-needed weight of the car. The aftermarket exhaust will give you the power and lower the weight. Also, put some $$ into brakes to help slow you down with the extra weight.

The light weight parts make sense, reduce GVWR and my towing will benefit, but, with what I've read all that intake and exhaust will is my car loud. At this point in my life I don't really care about how my car sounds as long as it sounds healthy. I could re-cam the engine for a boost in hp, but is hp really what I need? Don't I really need stability? Wouldn't suspension upgrades be more necessary then making my car loud?
As a noob to th subaru, any opinions would be helpful.
BTW, the tranny cooler is a must.

The muffler and intake *might* make it loud, depending on what kind you get. To get hp and torque gains, it doesn't need to be loud, and an intake/exhaust is probably easier and cheaper than anything else that might create similar gains. Is yours a MT or AT? This may affect how much strain will be put on the tranny, I don't know how though.
As far as suspension, it's hard to answer performance questions in ther case where something is being towed. For example, a larger rear swaybar reduces understeer normally, but when towing...???? Lowering it (dropping your center of gravity) is the only thing I can think of that would definitely assist in stablity while towing. I have had a 98 impreza wagon for a couple years, so if you have any wagon-specific questions, I'll be happy to try to answer them (you usually don't get very many responses from the coupe/sedan majority... save for a few thoughtful contribtors...

Right now, I have an intake on my 98 2.2... no exhaust (stock). I love the sound (it just changed the tone, maybe a tad louder- when you get on it) The sound issue is kind of keeping me from getting an exhaust, but I know there are quiet ones out there that still give you the gains. If someone knows of a quiet, high performance exhaust for the 2.2, dont be shy... I'd like to know, as might others.
The Borla system will sound real nice, and pretty quiet. A borla system made my 01 Monte SS sound like a Benz at idle, and sounded real nice when at full throttle. I've heard that the Greddy isnt too loud.
