Snow is great but whats with the odd engine noise?

Hello all,

First snow with the WRX and Im a bit confused. Its an 04 Wagon 5 spd. and when I started her up tonight, no problems. Going around town though presented some odd behavior from the engine.

1) On shifts of more than 3k, it almost sounded like there was no muffling from the intake. A lot of noise coming back through the cabin. I cleared off the snow from the hood after that and it really didnt make a huge amount of difference.

2) Its always been an issue with the 04 I think, but on shifts above 3k-4k, the engine will actually climb a few hundred rpm then drop. It seems the snow exaserbates this problem??? At least the noise makes it louder.

My question, has anyone experienced this before??? Any ideas???

Thanks,
Chris

confused

Could it be that the snow that is on the ground is muffling the other noises that car makes naturally? Tire noise (there is none on snow) exchaust noise, etc...? Thus making the engine noise seem louder?

Thumbs up

It seems like my intake noises became more and more noticeable over the first 10K miles I put on the car, and have since leveled off. You might check your snorkel for snow or mud, and while you're at it, you might as well pop out your air filter and vacuum the crap that gets stuck in the box under the filter. I know I've found little rocks in my air box after driving in the snow! If your vehicle is still running smooth and making power the way it should, I'd guess you have nothing to worry about with the additional intake noises.

The rpm's jumping between shifts is normal and has been discussed a lot here. FWIW, owner's of VW/Audi 1.8 turbo's report the same thing.

The snorkel looked good. Didnt notice much under the hood, and it sounded pretty normal sound wise when I did. Its not doing it anymore, so Im thinking it was snow related.
