shifting into drive-slow to engage

I just bought my subaru forester and am still checking things out on it. Thanks for the answers on the trans fluid. I was freaking out as I had never seen yellow trans fluid. This afternoon, when I put the car in drive, it did not engage. It would go into reverse, 3rd, etc. but when I put it in drive it acted like it was in neutral. I turned it off and back on and waited about a minute before putting it into drive and then waited a few seconds before driving. It did fine then. I remember the salesman telling me to wait a few minutes after starting the car before taking off. Is this just something these vehicles do or do I need to be worried? I sure don't want this car if it is fixing to have transmission problems! I am calling them tomorrow so any info you can give would be greatly appreciated! It is an automatic not stick.
