DO NOT go cheap on the downpipe. The cheap ones leak and rust. You can't go catless without reflashing come ECM anyways
^ hes right, if you are getting it just for sound and don't plan on swapping your DP, just get a muffler. My stock muffler was chopped and the previous owner put an Aero something muffler on it and it sounded pretty damn good for everything else being stock. Had a few people ask if it was a magnaflow or what setup I was running.

I would be more concerned about a cheap catback. Downpipes are relately simple and inexpensive anyways. A catback has more visible parts, has to support more weight (the Cobb replicas and random other brands are not unknown to rust right off the hanger in winter climates), and has parts that can degrade over time (unless you have a cheapo catted downpipe as well). Also keep in mind that a lot of knock off brands false advertise about the use of T304 stainless steel and use cheaper grades that can deteriorate much more quickly (examples are SRS, ERZ/CNT, Godspeed, JNA/M2/GMS, etc.) Fitment and flange quality matter on a downpipe, but there is more to mess up on the rear half of the exhaust.

^all true. If you get a catless downpipe, there isnt really much to it and stuff can't go wrong with it. Catted is another story, I haven't even seen a non brand name catted downpipe but I'm sure they are out there and I'd be willing to bet that the cat doesnt last and fails quick. As long as you don't have leaky gaskets and keep up with keeping moisture off a catback if you choose to get a non brand name one, it should be fine, but of course won't last as long as a brand name one. It's worth coating a catback to make it last longer, but thats more out of pocket money

ERZ/CNT makes a catted downpipe.

I was specifically referring to my earlier comment about the fiberglass insulation blowing out quicker than in name brand. This takes many years on name brands (it took my Hayward and Scott 10 years and ~100,000 to start) but much much earlier on off-brands. The exhaust will get louder and the sound will change (sounds less refined).

I've personally seen a friend's 1 year old SS Autochrome 240SX exhaust break right off the hangers because of rust.....in north Texas (rust, what's that?)

Thanks for all the help guys, i'll go with Lowend's idea since I did some looking into. What kind of mufflers sound nice, I want something that sounds nice but not too loud as in obnoxiously driving down the neighborhood waking everyone up loud but loud enough to sound nice
