Post count issue

Why not let members keep their titles from legitimate posts prior to the decision that posts in certain forums won't count?

Some people are proud to achieve a certain status. When the rug is pulled out from beneath them, it undermines the whole site.

I'll agree, it would be nice to keep the title. But disagree with the "pulling the rug out" The board is now just a few days old. Things are being changed around. It will happen while Alex (with member's inputs) figures out the best way to set it up.

I didn't expect the post counts in the non-tech areas to last, too easy to drive up post counts, as many (myself included) showed.

this is also pointless

Ed Nov 23, 2002 09:44 PM

Fair enough. But make the ground rules known up front.

Arcanum Nov 23, 2002 09:53 PM

Yes, a list of rules and etiquettes would be nice. But we know he has a billion other things to do.

I'm basically treating the board right now as a beta test. Overall I think we are doing well, for a group of people with no written in stone rules yet. I didn't see any flame wars going on, no nudity, cursing beyond what is acceptable. The monkey helps on that one:) Really, quite an accomplishment with no mods. OK, I did see one mod listed in a regional forum I believe. I can live with being a Junior, it's better than Newbie.

I got rolled back. Cool. I don't care if he keeps the post count viewable at all. Maybe let me keep my title but leave the actual amount a mystery.

Lobster Man Nov 24, 2002 12:36 PM

I say elimnate them all together and just have the Date Registered/ Member # sign.

Bradus Nov 24, 2002 02:16 PM

I just want to know why my post count is still at zero. I have posted in several forums and yet it still reads zero.

What gives?

As for the title thing, I like them. Personally, I'd like more than the run of the mill noob and specialist titles. Some additional titles inbetween 0 and 555 posts would be nice, don't you think?

Cheers!

Post count-based titles are evil. They serve no purpose whatsoever, all they do is promote postwhoring. I say- hide post counts and let users create their own titles.
Now you only get credit for posts in the tech forums (maybe a few others, not sure) No credit for off topic.

I think most newcomers use post count as a way to help filter thru what to believe and what not to. I know I did at first.

Some people whore just because the title looks good. Sometimes these people have a better title than they deserve and could easily, but possibly unintentionally steer someone in the wrong direction.

I think the new system gives the average reader a better chance at obtaining more useful knowledge. Or the ability to more easily filter thru all the static.

It gives the reader a better idea of who has contributed alot technically... Or at least thats my theory :)

As for losing all our previous posts. It sucks but we cant really complain. 90% of the first thousand or so posts were very OT anyways.

Subi Chicky Nov 25, 2002 05:07 AM

Wow, I lost all 20 something of my first posts.

Oh well.
