you asked how the WRX compares to the EVO. Short answer: it doesnt. The EVO is more comparable to the STI, it has about 45 more hp and much different handling characteristics. I'd say get the EVO (but it sounds out of your price range) over the WRX. But if you've got that much $, get the STI.

Well I would post a lengthy reply but I couldn't put it any better than Derbagley did, so I'll just reiterate a couple of things...

Don't plan on modding if you're not comfortable with cars to begin with. Instead, plan to learn more about them and somewhere down the line maybe you'll be ready to think about mods.

Learn to drive stick on an old car - buy a junker if you have to - it's a totally different experience to driving an automatic and you will crunch the gears while learning. There are several threads around the forums about manual shifting, I highly recommend you find them and read them. Yes, you want a stick (manual) shift with a Turbo.

Turbos are fun. If you learn to drive your car in the "Range" there aren't many cars that can stand up to it. It's all about useing the RPM band. The nice thing about the turbo also is that the car is very driveable at lower RPM's (not super torky) My sugestion would be to find a wagon (i am biased of course) do to the extra storage and all. If you go with the sedan, screw the stupid *** wing.........RRR!!!!!!! I hate those freekn' wings. That's my .02

also how does the evolution stack up to the wrx??
Personally, I wouldn't. I agree with Derbagley's view on this.

i am very new to cars in general - never bought one before ever. i currently have automatic transmission. im guessing there is no point in buying a wrx unless i get manual, right? i can always learn. what is the main advantages of getting manual.
Automatics have their advantages. Also, there are some differences in the AWD system between the 4EAT vs. the 5MT. Basically, the computer has more control over the AWD system in the automatic.......I believe it's called VTD-Variable Torque Distribution. I also believe the auto has a 45/55 torque split vs. the 50/50 found on the manuals. Obviously, the split changes as the need arises. In my opinion, a manual is more fun and gives the driver more control over the power.

also - what would be the best way to buy off the dealership? i really dont want to get raped with high prices.
Try dealing with them via e-mail or over the internet. Check out www.edmunds.com for some tips. There are a few other buying guides out there. The key is research.

from what i hear is that the wrx really doesnt get "FAST" until the turbo kicks in, after a while. this true? i really want a wrx, and i am kinda clueless on how and what to get. how cheap can they go for?? even for a 02?
Derbagley explains this pretty well. You may want to get your hands on a power/torque graph so you can see the variations along the RPM band. It will give you an idea (do a search on this forum). Your best bet is to take one for a test drive to see for yourself.

what is the main diff between the 02-03- and 04 models?
There are many little (& not so little) differences between the years........even mid-years. For example, there are 2 radiator caps on the later model '03's while earlier '03's and all '02's only have one. Also, some '02's have a problem with clutch shudder (Subaru/FHI has put out a TSB on this). ........and I believe '03's had a mechanism added in their 5MT's that helped prevent damage from abusive driving. These changes are not "publicized" by the manufacturer.

As for the '04's, I don't really know about the various mechanical changes as opposed to the '03's. The cosmetic differences are obvious (front end, rear, seats, gauge cluster, etc.). One thing to consider is that you'll get the latest advancements if you buy an '04.

Check out the regional forum to see what others a paying in your area. Are you looking to spend no more than 20k out-the-door (tax, license, financing)?

also - what features do u recomend?*optional accesories* u can get from the dealership??
Most accessories can be added by a novice with just a couple simple tools (i.e. auto dimming mirror, cabin filter, armrest ext, factory alarm, etc). Subaru pre-wires there vehicles to make the installation of these add-ons very easy. It's a lot more cost efficient to just buy the items after the fact and install them yourself. The exception would be things like the rear deck spoiler.

are any accesories just.plain.dumb?
This is purely subjective. You should really go down to a dealership to take a look at cars equipped with the various options. You need to decide whether they're right for you.
