well here is the deal
im interested in buying a new car. i am looking into a few diff types, but the wrx is on the top of my list. i just love this car.
would it be better to just get a 2.5rs and put a turbo kit on it?,,
also how does the evolution stack up to the wrx??
i am very new to cars in general - never bought one before ever. i currently have automatic transmission. im guessing there is no point in buying a wrx unless i get manual, right? i can always learn. what is the main advantages of getting manual.
also - what would be the best way to buy off the dealership? i really dont want to get raped with high prices.
from what i hear is that the wrx really doesnt get "FAST" until the turbo kicks in, after a while. this true? i really want a wrx, and i am kinda clueless on how and what to get. how cheap can they go for?? even for a 02?
what is the main diff between the 02-03- and 04 models?
im looking to spend maybe no more than 20k ? im hoping that is enough.
also - what features do u recomend?*optional accesories* u can get from the dealership??
are any accesories just.plain.dumb?
its my first post here!!
sorry for so long
thanks in advanced.

Ok.........
First- do some searching on this website.
I will try to cover some of your questions.
1.I would not take a new RS and turbo it. You would lose the warranty and wouls end up paying more fore an unrelaiable machine as opposed to owning a tuned by the factory turbo car (You can still mod the WRX later for more power-and it's easier because you have 75000 WRX owners out there looking for performance stuff as opposed to the handful of RS owners with turbos. (if you buy an older RS of the last generation-98 thru 2001- then it might make more sense to turbo that- no warranty and lower purchase price than new. I would not suggest that for a daily driver unless you are a mechanic)
2.Manual transmission offers more performance and allows for more involved driving. I would find a friend with an older easy to drive manual to learn on first instead of jumping in on a new one.
3.Take someone with you who knows how to deal with dealerships. Get a buyers guide. This will outlay the MSRP and Invoice prices for all new cars. The price of a car is a negotiable thing. Its not like buying toilet paper. You need to deal with the sales people. Don't put up with a pushy dealer, or one that is not being honest (If they can't answer a question- they should feel comfortable with finding out, not just making stuff up.) As a rule WRXs have been going for about invoice or a few hundred dollars higher. (MSRP is what the manufacturer says the car is worth- you don't pay that unless the car is in high demand. Invoice is what the dealer allegedly pays for it-roughly 10% less than MSRP. The dealer actually gets more money- but its not made public.)
4.The wait for a turbo to kick in is called "lag". A turbo pressurises the air coming into an engine by using the exhaust coming out of the engine. It takes time to make pressure coming out then using that to generate pressure for what's coming in. That delay is called lag. It you keep the engine's revs above 3000 rpm, it will be momentary. Some people don't like it, some don't mind it, some love it. 04s go out the door for 22.5k-23k if you find a good deal. Used have high resale value- not a big enough savings over new. (plus with a high performance car, you don't know what the previous owner has done with it.
5.02-03 models are bugeye (round headlights). 04 got a redesign because the bugeye look was not well accepted by the world market. Japan, UK, and other countries have had the WRX for like 10 years (roughly I forget the fist year.)
6.Save up 2 more grand and buy new. It's worth it. The monthly payment number is what you should be concerned with anyway.
7.Most with sedans like to get the wing. Others like the armrest extender. There are no options that you could not get later and put on. The WRX comes pretty well loaded. (A/C, ABS, AWD, 6-CD changer in dash, power everything) The one hting that bug me is that they just started offering a sunroof. And you need to buy a sedan with a lux package to get it. That is beyond your price range.
Do some research, learn stick shift, then look around.

you asked how the WRX compares to the EVO. Short answer: it doesnt. The EVO is more comparable to the STI, it has about 45 more hp and much different handling characteristics. I'd say get the EVO (but it sounds out of your price range) over the WRX. But if you've got that much $, get the STI.
Well I would post a lengthy reply but I couldn't put it any better than Derbagley did, so I'll just reiterate a couple of things...
Don't plan on modding if you're not comfortable with cars to begin with. Instead, plan to learn more about them and somewhere down the line maybe you'll be ready to think about mods.
Learn to drive stick on an old car - buy a junker if you have to - it's a totally different experience to driving an automatic and you will crunch the gears while learning. There are several threads around the forums about manual shifting, I highly recommend you find them and read them. Yes, you want a stick (manual) shift with a Turbo.

Turbos are fun. If you learn to drive your car in the "Range" there aren't many cars that can stand up to it. It's all about useing the RPM band. The nice thing about the turbo also is that the car is very driveable at lower RPM's (not super torky) My sugestion would be to find a wagon (i am biased of course) do to the extra storage and all. If you go with the sedan, screw the stupid *** wing.........RRR!!!!!!! I hate those freekn' wings.
That's my .02
That's my .02

As for the '04's, I don't really know about the various mechanical changes as opposed to the '03's. The cosmetic differences are obvious (front end, rear, seats, gauge cluster, etc.). One thing to consider is that you'll get the latest advancements if you buy an '04.

this is more help than i ever could have hoped for. u guys are great. thanks alot.
a good friend of mine works at a bank, and i plan just taking a full cash out loan from them - and paying for the wrx in cash. after a bit of swaying. i must go new- seeing how it was stated above, if i get a used "racing" type car, i can only assume what has been done to it in the past. not good.
im going to get my cousins truck and learn stick on that to get the feel of it and try to be very comfortable with it until november-that is when i am buying this *crosses fingers*
i plan on going to the dealership tomorow and getting the whole lowdown, thanks alot guys.
addional comments are still helpfull =)
