Generally cops don't have the knowledge of our car's unique setup to make a determination. Your chances of getting caught by the police with a catless downpipe are unlikely, even more so, if you buy a conservative looking one like the Cobb catless downpipe your chances are quite slim. If you get pulled over for noise pollution he'll write you a ticket and you make the choice whether to fix it and get it signed off or just pay the fine. If he pops your hood open and you have other illegal mods then it is off to the state ref.... I have dealt with this stuff quite a few times as you can probably tell.
...Solution: If you go catless either keep your factory catback exhaust or get an ultra silent aftermarket catback to quiet down the sound like the Borla Hush. Hope this helps.

To avoid the problem of getting sent to a ref, keep the bling factor under the hood down, I was in a buddy's car with a front mount, everything is flat blacked, not bling, cop couldnt tell, he got a fix it for the muffler.
if its a dp your worried about pick up a heat shield or modify your stock heat shield to fit, should hide it well

This might not be a popular opinion, but I feel that running catless on a daily driven vehicle is pretty irresponsible. Regardless of federal laws, DMV, CARB, etc, it's just messed up to dispose of a reasonably sound solution to the nasty byproducts of an internal combustion gasoline engine (carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons/VOCs and Nitrogen Oxide(s)) - all in the name of a few more WHP.
It's one thing if you have a track car or you rally/off road it...but it smacks of selfishness to drive around every day, dumping noxious gases into everyone's air for an extra 1/10th (or less?) in the quarter mile.
So I'd urge you to swallow the extra cost and stay catted. I'm upgrading DPs next month and realize that it's more expensive - but it's the right thing to do. And I'm no environmental freak, just concerned about living in a highly populated area with worse air than we already have.

i agree but an extra 150-200 dollars cheaper is tempting :x
i think i'll stick with catted, mixed opinions among my friends so i just wanted to hear from the i-club's view.
but overall, yeah....cops can't tell if you have a cat or not, and I bet most of them are too lazy to actually try to get on their hands/ knees and look. Hell, I could probably point at my borla resonator and go...yeah, see....that's the catalytic converter!
Its not that much louder w/o it than with it...more about which brand exhaust you have.

Many of our modern cars will pass smog with stock tune and without a cat except for the visual inspection or CEL's.
Frankly I'm less worried about air pollution in the bay area, especially compared to the Los Angeles basin, and more worried about people ridin dirty without insurance/proper licenses.

I ran catless for about a month, but throwing fireballs out of the **** was making me nervous so I picked up a helix catted, butt dyno couldn't tell the difference, lost maybe 5hp on the gst dyno though.
i had a catless turbo back on my evo, but now i chose to go with a catted helix dp on my sti...it's just not worth the risk in socal. a catless vehicles smells POISONOUS, and if you run into cops that know that smell (esp. motorcycle cops) you better pray they don't completely own you. my friends is300 missing 2 factory cats got a pretty fat ticket, i forgot how much exactly though
Catless is just cheap and dumb. I had my 2002 WRX tuned with an APS 3" TBE with high-flow cat; two hours later the tuner worked on a 2003 with a catless TBE and that guy ended up with 2 WHP *less* than me. His WRX was so loud that everyone but the tuner left the shop until the dyno runs were over; mine is so quiet no one even notices the exhaust until I hit 4500+ RPM. The gains going catless are so minimal compared to the very real costs (negative attention and fixit tickets)
This is absolutely true, the Subaru rally cars for the past 5 years, both pro and SCCA, have two catalytic converters and a 3/4" restrictor on the inlet, and must produce no more emissions than a standard automobile. They also make 300whp and 400+ torque, with cats.
where i live (walnut creek area), the wc cops will pull anyone over for no reason if you drive past 12am. i've been pulled over 3 times on a freaking under the radar hyundai elantra. cop just asked me if i was on probation, why am i driving so late, blah blah, runs my plate/drivers license and lets me go.
after the 3rd time i just drive the long way around avoiding some of the major streets.
not only that i can go green-hippy-crazy on those catless peoplse
j/k
i plan on getting BPM GT belmouth w/ cat, any input on this?
found a tbe deal for just $800 and from what i heard on youtube, i love the sound.
