I have been yearning for a Valentine 1 for a while. I got to use on once for a road trip to LA and back and it was awesome.

I've had my escort 8500 for several years now and it's gotten me out of trouble countless amount of times, but if I were to recommend one it'd be the valentine V1 or the Sti driver( or something like that)

Tried 'em all and the one that I trust everyday is the Beltonics RX-65 Pro. I never question it, it has never failed me. Many who have ridden along with me will testify to how good this thing really is. It does not bombard with false alarms, just reliable long range detection. You'd do your self a huge favor by honing your own skills for enforcement detection before getting a radar detector. It is a tool, you cannot rely on any detector 100%. The Beltronics STi Driver is the same as the RX-65 except it has a magnesium case that renders it invisible to spectrum detectors. This has advantages in that LEOS can use detector detectors to find you, the guy with a detector in a bunch.
Seriously the Beltronics are top notch. V1s, Escort, Bel, will all serve well. The Bel is my choice.

I 2nd this... i have had my Beltronics RX-65 Pro for about two years now, and love it. As ipozestu said, developing your own skills for law enforcement detection is critical.

Lidar=laser. Any detector you consider will probably have this. If not it's junk. LIDAR(Laser) will only be detected if you happen to catch scatter, more likely that you speed is currently being aquired. If your detector pings Laser you'd better slow the hell down, like yesterday because they already have you. LIDAR is much more concentrated than radar. You could have a LEO shooting your license plate or headlight and your detector may never go off because the beam is below the sensor. It doesn't mean your detector is crap it just means it didn't get the memo. Typically they going to shoot the front of the car license plate or headlights to reflect the beam. This mean that you must position your detector correctly.

v1. I know there are many others out there but I swear by the v1. Like someone else said, it's a tool that you MUST know how to read/listen/use and understand. The ability to understand what your detector is telling you is much more helpful than any specific brand or distance test someone did. Get any of the top tier ones (i.e. >$350) and learn it inside and out. They will all easily pay for themselves in the first year.

2000 ft is too far away to be admissible in court. 1200ft is the cut off. If the gun is detecting you that mean it has bounced a beam off your car and your detector will pick it up.
