Indash tablet
 

So I decided that I wanted to do something different for a new radio. So last night I hacked my Kindle Fire and have it running android 4.1. Then today I installed it in to the dash and have it running through aux input. I assembled a 12v to 5v regulator and connected it to the kindle. Then moved the radio to the glove box, so that the radio can still be used.

would you possibly have picture of the install? always wanted to put a tablet in the car. Did you make a bracket for the tablet?

What he said! I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 laying around that I might just try doing the same as you, really neat.

Thats awesome! but how do you put the tablet to sleep/wake it up?

Now I wish I would have taken more pictures, I need to adjust the way I mounted the radio, so I can take more. When you go in to settings on the tablet you can turn on the debug mode. From there you can turn on the never sleep when charging mode.
I can try and throw to gather a write up if you guys would like?

The main downside i can see with this, you need wifi to play Pandora ect right?

I know little to nothing about the Kindle, can you save music internally?

In fact, I came into the audio sub forum to look for head unit recommendations, lol.

akimpreza: Which head unit are you using? Also, you could run a modified kernel that auto boots the tablet once there is a current from the charger (can't remember the thread, but it was over at XDA)

You could use an app called tablet talk, it would allow your tablet to handle all incoming calls/texts from your phone AND use your data plan over wi fi. You can then pair the tablet to a BT compatible head unit. And yes, you can store music on a kindle tablet.

Wow man how long did it take you to do this? As far as charging you have it connected to the cig lighter? Or USB?

Sorry that it has taken me so long to reply back to the questions. My life got very busy and I just been to overwhelmed to spend time on the site.


Since I started this project I have upgraded to a Nexus 7 tablet 32 gbs with wifi. The reason for this was to get Bluetooth, bigger storage, high res screen, plus GPS. I still rooted the nexus so I can use the rooted apps. A few of the main apps I use are Tasker, force rotate, volume in notification, and Waze for navigation.

As far as how I mounted it, I went the kiss route. When I pulled the deck out and measured the depth, I found that a piece of flat stock was all I needed. So I took and put a couple piece of none skid pad on the flat stock, and some on top of the heater controls. With the nexus in place, the bezel squeezes the tablet against the flat stock. For charging, I took a 12v charger for the tablet a part, removed the adapter part, and soldered a pair of wires in its place. A soldered the power line to the 12 volt switch line of the radio. For the head unit I just use a cheap JVC radio. I spent $100 on it, the main things I looked for are Bluetooth and aux input. I use the Bluetooth on the radio for my phone, and the aux for the tablet. The Bluetooth on the tablet is used with the obd2 adapter I have.

I know this is a short and not very detailed write up, but its the best I can do at the moment. Keep asking question and I will do my best to get back to you quicker.

Hey akimpreza, you can run tabtalk, it will allow your tablet to handle your phones calls, texts, etc. It will also tether to your phones wifi. You can pair the tablet to the headunit AND the BT ODBII Adapter at the same time.

The problem I run in to is that my phone connects to the head unit as both a phone and a music player. So it bumps the tablet out as the music player.

go to your phones bluetooth settings, select the headunit bluetooth connection on your phone and edit it, theres 2 boxes, 1 for phone audio and 1 for media audio, simply uncheck the box you don't want.

IMO, using the tablets USB DAC would probably be the optimal route for sound quality. Your phone pairs to tablet via wifi and BT for data and calls (using tabtalk). Then you get sound from your tablet to the headunit via the USB port at the bottom. you'd need a usb hub and a special kernel:

I was running a kindle, but I switched to a nexus 7. I really like these kernels, and will install the permanent installation one. I need to look more in to audio through the USB. Right now I'm in the process of ordering a 12 volt USB hub. So I can charge right from the hub, plus run a 64gig flash drive.
