Gun storage?

Mods, feel free to move if this is the wrong subforum, but...

I had one of these in my truck:

I'd love to find something similar for the WRX. Anyone know of any solutions? The only thing I seem to see so far (and not that I could even find on these boards) is buying a smaller case and stuffing it under the seat secured with a cable lock. That doesn't exactly leave it easily accessible though, not to mention tends to be less than discreet to store something in there when you need to (and the cable can be easily cut).

Save yourself the hassle and apply for a CCW

Irrelevant. Even with a CCW there's places you need to unholster and store your weapon (federal buildings, military base, courthouse, VA, etc). It's also handy for locking up your wallet, etc at the gym, or storing cash if you just sold something on craigslist and don't want to plop it in your wallet while you finish the rest of your errands, all kinds of stuff.

Has anyone taken their center console apart to swap out shifters or something? How much room is down there? Could you maybe put a safe in that hinges to the floor and tilts out sideways towards the driver's leg? Yeah you'd have to cut into the plastics, but...I can't find anything for the current small storage anyway.

After more googling, it would appear this topic (gun storage in vehicle) pops up frequently on other forums, so let me preemptively get the arguments out of the way so we can stay on topic:

Q: Where do you live that's so dangerous?!
A: Bay Area, CA. It's not particularly dangerous per se but there IS crime here. Has nothing to do with gun storage.

Q: What are you scared of that you feel you need a gun in your vehicle?!
A: Not a damn thing. But I'm also keenly aware of the risks around me. However, this is more for the times when I don't feel like having things stolen out of my vehicle that could later be used in commission of a more dangerous crime or to hurt someone.

Q: Isn't it illegal to carry a gun in your vehicle?!
A: Depends on where you live. This is a global forum. The world does not revolve around you and your city/state/country where it's illegal (or may simply be highly restrictive). Also, still irrelevant to the topic here which is simply storage.

Q: Why don't you just get a CCW?
A: Irrelevant for the reasons I listed in the last post. There's places you'd still need to unholster and store your weapon, or times when you would need to and going home just to drop it off isn't feasible (ie, coworkers decide "let's all go out for drinks" and you live an hour away from work).

Q: Are you a LEO?
A: No.

Q: What kind of gun?
A: Anything from a G26 to a full size Kimber. No long barrels, long slides, etc though.

Q: Why don't you just get [x,y,z] that you can store under the seat with a cable lock?
A: Because if someone breaks the window and sees that, a cable is much easier to cut and they can grab the whole thing and run and unlock it later. A console vault type installation would mean a thief would have to dismantle half the interior around it to get at it - far more time and effort than a typical smash and grab.

I think that about covers it. I'll update this with other Q/As as the thread continues. That should hopefully help the mods out so we can keep the thread open and simply prune the trolling posts (if any crop up). :)

I like where you are going with this. Really interested to know what you come up with!

Can anyone take some measurements and see just what the interior dimensions of the current center console are for the WRX? Are they identical in size to the Impreza and Outback center consoles? Are they the same size for 2004-2016? Also can anyone possibly remove their glovebox and post some pics and measurements? If the center console turns out to be too small of a space for ConsoleVault to build a safe into it, I was thinking a good second option would be to build something that replaces your glove box and bolts in, then uses the original glove box lid as a facade to cover the safe's ACTUAL lid/opening.
