double din vs. single din
still using the stock double din unit..... and finally tired of it.... dont mind the features and the changer in dash.... but i upgraded my speakers mildly (6' infinite kappas in front and 5.5' in the rears..... and the car still sounds like ****... i know i need some sort of woofer.... maybe a 8 boxed under the seat? but before i do anything i probably need to replace the HU.... so which is better.... the single or the double as far as all around.... appearance is probably the key deciding factor besides the amount of cd's u can load..... so do the singles look funny in the dash, or does anyone have pics of the dash with a single in? do u put a little pocket underneath or what? Is it possible to run an amp with the stock HU, or will i get engine noise with this?? not looking for alot.... just more than i have now and better quility... not looking to enter contests or spend upwards of 500 bucks really
thanks Seth |
Most aftermarket units are single DIN, the space is usually filled with a pocket. Stereo dealers sell the pockets, if you buy a unit from Crutchfield they supply the pocket free along with the harness adapter. I have one of those and yes it's cheap but it looks fine.
You'll see a lot of single DIN/pocket setups, it's very common. While it is possible to add an amp to the stock HU, it doesn't have line outputs so you'd need to use a speaker to line level converter. This does work but won't give the best results compared to an aftermarket HU with line outs. |
if you dont want to keep loading CD's, you can think about getting a HU that is MP3 compatible. my double din kenwood touch screen is MP3 and DVD compatible, so now i just have 1 DVD that has all my prior CDs on it and more. its nice. no more fidgeting with discs.

you will be able to use the stock HU with a hi/lo converter. it will require splicing of your speaker wires to hook up amps and a sub. b/c the speakers are in the doors you probably would be splicing the wires behind the HU. there's also a remote wire part you probably will want to get, which sends signal to your amps when you power your HU on and off. it's not recommended going this route b/c of all of this. aftermarket HU's are just plug and play

just out of curiousity have you had any problems with the kenwood and playing MP3s on DVD? i asked some people on imprezawrxsti.com who had the DDX-7015 if they could play MP3s that were burned onto DVD-Rs. i listen to a lot of DJ mixes so being able to burn them all onto a few DVDs would be a lot better than a TON of CDs. most people i asked hadn't tried and and didn't know if it would work. if it does that would be sweet. :) (now i just need to get my tax refund so i can afford the thing. ;)) |
so far i've had no problems at all. just burn as audio mp3 DVD and i think its good to go. sometimes the burner will hiccup and cause a track to not play, but otherwise its great. i love it.

thanks for the info
well this double din is silver so it matches the rest of the interior which is cool and it plays mp3's also..... it also retails for 500 and i found it half of that used...... besides i think the pocket is useless if u go single |
