Just got a radar detector...
 

Hey all, I am the proud owner of a new Escort 8500 50X. Supposed to be the ****, this thing... Anyway, considering the big hood scoop on these STi's, I was wondering what spot would be the best to place the thing. Any ideas?

right above the rear view mirror and hardwire it in

I read that it's best to have it low because cops try to aim for your front license plate. That's why I was wondering if having it low (like on the dash) was going to be affected by the large hood scoop.

in my valentine manual it says have it as high as u can because signals travel high then low so you may catch it even farther before you see him

I say mount it high up just above the rear view mirror. But that's also because I have a laser jammer installed as well = extra LIDAR sensors and protection :p

PLEASE pm me about the lidar senor jammers! I just got tagged going pretty quick and he was using LIDAR... Please let me know if yours works, and how much, where you got them...etc!

OK, I'll try mounting it up there then.... I don't think my cable is long enough to reach from the cig lighter all the way up to the rearview mirror though, I'll have to see.

NewShockerGuy, you have PM -- the best thing about the laser jammers is that the "receiver/transmitter pods" are pretty stealth unless you know what you're looking for (see pic)

ckuroka1 - just hardwire it in. If you're not sure how, you can also check out my DIY on converting the standard supplied coiled smartplug to a direct wire kit:

i'll pics of my set up i used the cig lighter plug too. pretty clever how i did it with out having to hardwire it in. the valentine came with a kit to hardwire it in with all the necessary things.

I see them on the front of your rex but where are they in the back!?
Also how hard was it to install the jammers and how are they in the weather... how are they protected?

I believe it is right above his plate frame in the back.

Yeah, the rear is just above the license plate. The jammer units are basically "sealed" against the elements - rain, snow, etc..

If you can install fog lights, then you shouldn't have a problem installing these. The hardest part is just threading wires from the outside into the cabin.

Im not sure if the 05's have the same little useless sunvisor over the rearview like the 02's. But I unscrewed mine and pulled the two pieces apart, kept the main trim piece to cover the gaps in the headliner carpet, then ran the screw threw one of the suction cup holes in the mounting bracket for my escort radar detector. it looks pretty good. cant even see it from the outside at all really.... its tucked up there really nice. all i need to do now is hard wire it.. damn cord gets in the way of everything.

OK, I had to make this my first post. Let me let ya'll in on a little secret. (And this is coming from a certified LIDAR & RADAR instructor, ME!) I have been a security police officer in the USAF for 7 years now. I have been to instructor courses for 3 different LIDAR/RADAR manufacturers, in 4 different states. I can tell you this: Passive RADAR/LIDAR jammers (Unless you have a Scorpion Ultimate, you have a passive jammer) DO NOT WORK!! NONE OF THEM! (Unless of course, your vehicle was made by Northrop Grumman or Boeing!) I know there are a lot of people on here that probably own one and will argue this fact with me, but they are just to trying to prove to themselves that they didn't waste their money. There have been tons of companies and several individuals that have tried to make these but the simple fact is, there has yet to be one that works! However, there IS an ACTIVE RADAR jammer, the Scorpion Ultimate, that does work. It costs around 2 grand and is highly illeagal, but it does work. If you doubt any of this, go here [url]http://www.radarjammer.com/[/url] this is one site that tell the truth when it comes to RADAR/LIDAR detectors/jammers. For all you who think your jammer works, let the guy on the site know. He will test it and if it works, he will pay you 5,000$.

Oh, yes, LIDAR is what most people commonly refer to as laser. And NO radar detector can protect you from it if the officer using it is properly trained. I can hit you with it from about 2 miles away, and you as soon as you get a warning, I already have your speed!
