Also the recessed filter in parlaiment cigarettes originated in WWI where they would ration out cigarettes to the soldiers. The soldier, sulking in his trench with both hands on his gun, would have to bite down on the filter to smoke. The filter element when mixed with saliva secretes a poisonous chemical that made the soldiers sick. Hence the recessed filter.

The 1/4 inch recession you see now is merely a throwback to these times where the filter was recessed almost a full inch. Also it's great for doing a bump of coke if you're into that sort of thing. Which I'm not...but I've seen it done.
