what does a 02 wrx needs to pull on an sti?
i am going to be purchasing an 02 wrx and my goal is to keep it stock appearing but have enough power to be able to pull a stock sti in a straight line, from any speed. my first planes are a cobb catless turbo back and programe w/up. what else should i start looking at? also with those mods would i benefit from any fuel upgrades, like sti pinks, or a pump? cause i will be doing a vf39 off my buddies sti, or possably a vf22 but it would be a lot more cost efficiant if i could do the fuel system piece by piece.
well from what i've recently heard, the Cobb stage 2 is enough to bring you up to 4.6 0-60 which is just the tad bit faster then the 4.7 timing. Of coarse if u do plan on starting to turn then u'd be looking at a few other upgrades.

you won't be able to pull the whole way with cobb stage 2. the 1/4 mile on the sti is faster... but u'll definitely jump off the line with the cobb stage 2. To pass up an sti, you'll be fine with a cobb stage 2.5 (includes pinks, turbo). Put on a sway bar and some nice tires.... and you'll shock the hell out of some sti's... you'll also have an illegal car though.

A very lightly modded STi (as in, bone stock with reflash + turboback) will stomp the hell out of any WRX without serious work done to it. If you want STi speed, go buy one. It's not cost-effective to chase them in a WRX.

Exactly what Ban Said. not cost effective. I got my 02WRX in 03 and at a good deal, but the mods I have on my car and its pretty even with STI;s the Other nite I was messing with one that has just an intake and it was fast as hell. I started to pull on him at the top of third and passing in fourth but until then it was pretty even. WRX+CAI, TBE, UPpipe, headers, SAFC, AVCR, STI RA gearset, EXedy stage1 clutch and flywheel, plus suspension mods. Stock turbo and I/C. ( all catless) Not that I am unhappy with my car, I love it its fun and pretty quick compared to alot of things driving around. But, the car makes 236AWHP on the dyno with ALL those mods and is EVEN with a dam STI. do that to an STI and dam. granted you are starting out with a bigger motor and more money to get the car, but if you break one tranny, its almost already worth it right there. But back to your question, I think with a UTEC, Pinks, and a bigger turbo and IC i would be faster.hehe but then again I guess thast a good amount of work to the car also, so once again like BAN said. Lots of work will make you faster. I have a VF39 and TXS top mount. once I get money for injectors, pump and UTEC I'll hopefully be making around 300WHP. But then agani if the guy in the STI does even some of those mods its all a waste anyways, if you are just lookig to beat Stock STIs
It's one of those "Yeah you can do it for cheap, but then you get sucked in and it's totally not worth it, but by the time you realize it you could have already bought the better car"
Anything up to the Vishnu st2 / TXS st4 is a real bargain IMO if you do your own work and source cheap parts. Then, with tranny, better block and heads, I would never spend that (unless my stage 4 setup breaks one of those components... sigh)

well if its a used wrx, to match a STi in straight line speed can be done in 4-5k. it'll be much cheaper than buying a new STi. However, if straight line speed is not all you're looking to match, get the STi.
to match the STi, you'll definitely need a new turbo and all the supoprting mods. also keep in mind the STi has .5 L on your wrx so you need to get a good amount of work to keep up.

I have to agree with Ban and the others its not going to be cost effective to try and match and exceed an STI. Dont be like all my friends who think they can go out and buy a turbo kit for their VR6 jettas and totally walk all over me. When it comes to building a car just worry about getting things done the right way and the way you want to do it. Just trying to beat another model of your car in only one facet isnt going to be as satisfying as building something that can handle itself in all conditions. Plus if you really want to aim high try to beat a Prosche Turbo or viper or what not.
