I KNOW what Detonation is........BUT, How does it really sound and is it EASILY noticed?

I have heard all the "symptoms" people describe,...i.e, Marbles in can, tapping, clatter,pinging,etc.

But I have never really heard anything "abnormal' sounding in any car or motorcycle I have had that I could detect as Detonation/Preignition..

Is it THAT noticeable?, And if so WILL I notice a big enough difference in the normal engine sounds?

I have the same question...Also is there any way to amplify the sound? Or a tool I can get that might help? I get a very small backfire when I shift from 3rd to 4th and from 4th to 5th. It will happen just after I hear the BOV make its noise…I hope that it is not a symptom of detonation. The backfire sound is really quiet, example if I am speaking so a person while driving at 60 mph I will not hear it, but take into account that I did sound proof the car…any help?
I have a 02WRX performance mods are as follows catless up and downpipe, exhaust, header, CAI, lightweight flywheel/act clutch, hks BOV on a STI TMIC.
