Review of STi Motor & Tranny Mounts

Well I installed these about a week ago and I've done enough driving on them to be able to give a decent review of their performance. The first thing I noticed was how much easier it was to fire up the engine when it was cold. Rather than turning over 3 or 4 times, it tends to just fire right up.

Now onto the more important parts. After having the chance to start the car early in the morning when that annoying clutch shudder tends to rear it's ugly head, I immediately noticed that even when i tried to induce the shudder, it was far less likely to occur. When it did occur, it was far less violent and the vibrations were of a much higher frequency. It is my opinion that the "looseness" of the stock mounts makes the problem much worse by allowing the entire motor and transmission rotate too far before the clutch disk slips on the flywheel and allows the mounts to recoil.

When the car is cold and tends to have very rough power delivery, the stock mounts also amplify the problem due to their inability to prevent the engine from rotating. The STi mounts were able to smooth things out a bit and reduce the "jumpy" feeling of the car under constant part throttle.

One of the best improvements these mounts make are that they make the car easier to drive in stop and go traffic as they greatly reduce the delay from when driver inputs throttle and clutch to when the car reacts.

Of course, shifts are crisper and throttle response is improved as well. I'm sure these parts only increase the shock loads on the transmission when dumping the clutch and shifting quickly so remember to shift SMOOTH not fast!!

Installation was not the easiest thing in the world either. If you have access to a midget or perhaps a clone one eighth your size, you will definitely want to bring it. There is one bolt on each of the motor mounts that are damn hard to get a wrench on. I'm 6'4" and damn near broke my hands trying to loosen those bolts, so don't say I didn't warn you. To do the tranny mount, I recommend just taking off the crossmember. It will end up saving you time in the long run. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me by PM or email or be creative and use this wonderful feature we have called REPLY. Have a nice day.

Yes, it's a pain for a person of your size. Me on the other hand, I'm a skinny basturd and my hans fit almost anywhere in the car with no problem. I did the tranny mount in 10 minutes, though I'm still waiting for the warmer weather to do the motor mounts.
I'll let you guys know when I'm done. I drove a friends car with all 3 done and I have to say, it's one of the best feel improvments to the car besides shifter booshings.

Alex...
