Question boxer engine

hey i was wondering if someone could tell what exactly is a boxer engine that we have. What are the differences compared to a normal engine (basically all other fours)? Or if you could direct me to a post that explains it, cause i have try searching for it and i just can't find it. Thanks a lot. :banana:

If your sanding infront of your bumper looking into the engine bay, the pistons of the engine fly outward (towards the side of the car then back twords the center), rather than up or down or in a V shape. Since they fly outward they call it a boxer because its similar to a boxer punching outwards.

Lets the engine be placed lower in the car for a lower center of gravity = good for handling, and easier to balance the engine since it is relatively symmetric.

Picture a V except with the cylinders staggered above and below each other a little in a W. Lets the engine be shorter.

Nice animations serrano! And sub-sonic, think of the W12 as two V6's crammed side-by-side into each other and you get the general idea

howstuffworks is da ish! Our "turbo explanation" thread has pics from there too. Howstuffworks is very thorough and easy to understand.

i4 = ketchup ("weaksauce", a la porkchop)
v6 = bbq sauce
h4 = habanero sauce
