The ECU calculates the amount of fuel to add based in part on the MAF reading. The stock BFV recirculates air, so that the totalized MAF is always accurate.
However, if you install an atmospheric venting BFV, then the totalized MAF reading is actually less than what is going into the engine.
This will cause your ECU to think there is more air than there really is, causing it to add too much fuel. Thus, your engine will run rich.
