Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Portland WRX Club Dyno Day Results!

This last Saturday, the Portland WRX club got together for a group dyno day. We had about 30 people, and 8 cars on hand to dyno and tune. Video footage will be online soon! Graphs are coming in the second post in just a min. I also have extensive data logs from the runs for my car and Johns, which I will post as well. It is interesting to see the boost/advance compared to torque.

The dyno is located at Matrix engineering in Portland Oregon. It is a Mustang 4WD, just installed. Thanks to Matrix for all of their help in getting us setup to tune! Also Thanks to Altasport for providing some giveaways for our drawing at the after dyno party! And last but not least, special thanks to Jeff Perrin for all the help in tuning each of these cars.

Before we talk results, let's talk calibration. As we all know, dyno numbers can vary a great deal from dyno to dyno. To provide some calibration, we brought along 2 stock WRXs to get a baseline. After some trial and error, we got consistent 178-180hp at the wheels, which corresponds very well with what Shiv's dyno comparison worksheet says for this brand.

It was a pretty sweet site to have 3 WRXs all with STI engines screaming at 8000 RPMs.

On to the results:

Car 1: Mine (Jeff Sponaugle)
Power Mods: (full mod list at http://www.wrxworld.com/membercars/jeff/WRX/default.htm)
STI Ra Engine/6 speed tranny
Aquamist Water Injection
AVO 500HP turbo (t04e based)
PE 660cc injectors
MRT FMIC
Perrin Uppipe
BMP TT turboback exhaust
HKS Headers
Link Ecu (no avcs)
Blitz SBCID Boost control
Samco Intake Host
Vishnu Underdrive Pully
Unifilter Intake
Perrin Fuel Rails
GSS317 Fuel Pump
B&M Fuel Reg.

Medium tune, 100 octane unleaded map,24psi:
359.6 whp @6700 RPM
302.5 ft-lbs @6000 RPM

That translates to about 453HP at the crank, using the shiv mustang 1.26 correction. Tuning was mostly with fuel, and will need more work. AF was 10.5 or richer above 6500. Timing advance was about 29 degrees, which has lots of room for improvement with race gas. This map, when run with the water/methonol injection, should work well with my regular 20% toluene mix.

I wanted to push up to 26psi, but I wasn’t able to get the 3bar map sensor working. Even at 24, the stock MAP sensor is pegged the entire run. I’ll be back for more.

The AVO turbo is just incredible at high RPM. As you can see below in John's results, the AVO 450, combined with the AVCS is a real winning combination!

Car 2: John Haaland
STI Ra Engine/WRX Tranny
Aquamist Water Injection
AVO 450HP turbo (td04e based)
STI 550cc injectors
Blitz FMIC
Perrin Uppipe
BMP GT turboback exhaust
JDM STI ECU (with AVCS)
AVCR Boost Control
Perrin Intake Hose
Perrin Fuel Rails
GSS317 Fuel Pump

No real tuning, just running the stock STI JDM ECU with about 1.5kgcm boost (22psi)
315.48 whp @6500 RPM
273.92 torque @ 5800 RPM

This was one of the easiest runs, as there isn’t much to tune. John could get some good gains with both race gas, and a much leaner mixture. He was <10.2 above 5k. The STI ECU likes to dump fuel when it sees max MAF voltage (and it also throws a code).

Car 3: Tim Baily
Car 3: Tim Baily
Perrin Uppipe
STI injectors
TXS exhaust w/cat
fuel pump upgrade
utec w/closed loop boost control
VF35
AEM intake
APS FMIC DR500
92 octane +10% toluene = 94 octane final

Well Tuned, safe on 92+Toluene gas:
(about 18psi peak, bleeding down to 16psi)
266 whp @ 5800 RPM
267 torque @ 4300 RPM

Tim was by far the most consistent, with 5 or 6 runs in a row within a few HP. He actually got one run at about 277 whp, but got a single knock event around 5500, so he knocked it back a degree. This correlates well with the TurboXS Stage 4 (about 277 at the wheels with a VF30)

Car 4: Jeff Perrin
A stock WRX, with a JDM STI engine, completely stock except for:
Perrin Uppipe
Perrin Downpipe
Stock Exhuast, Muffler.
Stock STI JDM ECU (with AVCS wired up)
Stock WRX TMIC (small!!)
Pump Gas + 1 gallon of Toluene (about 94 octane)

No tuning, just start and go:
238 whp @ 6500 rpm
232 torque @ 4000 rpm (love that AVCS!)

This was a very easy run as well. Jeff Perrin is running on regular(92) pump gas most of the time, and without the Toluene and with a ECU relearn (which retards timing a bit), he was about 15 hp lower. Great performance for a completely stock STI motor, plus uppipe and downpipe. This was even using the factory ecu boost, which bleeds off quite a bit.

Car 5: James Sponaugle
VF-22 (16psi)
Perrin Uppipe
MRT turboback exhaust
STI Injectors
AVO FMIC

Light Tuning, just getting fuel right. On pump 92 gas, very conservative timing:
245 whp @ 5800 RPM
233 torque @ 4500 RPM

James was doing a first pass tune, and we worked mostly on fuel. Timing was conservative, and we will make a return trip to up the numbers some. This was a nice safe map, with very low boost (16psi for a VF-22).

First Lets look at wheel HP:

Then lets look at wheel torque

And lastly if we scale HP for crank ( just for humor, we all know that these correction factors are just guesses.
